Stiamo per scrivere una storia nuova, la storia della Firenze dei prossimi anni, della Firenze metropolitana. La vittoria ampia che abbiamo ottenuto al primo turno ci riempie di gioia e di responsabilità. È la vittoria del futuro sul vuoto, è la vittoria di chi ha creduto e crede in un progetto. Firenze insegna a fare le cose, a non aver paura. Noi le faremo. Metterò il cuore, la passione e tutto me stesso per fare meglio di prima.
Scriveremo una storia che si aggiungerà a quella di questi anni. Sarà una storia fatta di opportunità da cogliere. Penso all’operazione caserme, grazie alla quale, senza consumare un solo metro quadrato di suolo in più, restituiremo un’anima agli immobili militari con un mix di funzioni dal social housing ai servizi. Saremo i primi in Italia a farlo: significa qualcosa come 395 milioni di euro di impatto economico e forti ricadute occupazionali. Ma penso anche al G8, all’utilizzo dei fondi europei, al grande capitolo della cultura. Penso alle grandi opere, a partire dalle linee 2 e 3 della tramvia: stiamo parlando della più grande opera infrastrutturale mai realizzata in città nell’ultimo secolo. Non possiamo non cogliere queste opportunità, la nostra città è e deve essere ambiziosa. Noi lo saremo, faremo più di prima.

What we are about to write is a new story, the story of metropolitan Florence over the coming years. The fantastic margin we secured in the first round of the mayoral elections fills us both with joy and with a sense of responsibility. This is a victory of the future over the void, it is the victory of those who have believed – and still do believe – in a project. Florence teaches us to get things done and not to get cold feet about doing them. We will get things done. I will be putting my heart, my energy and my whole being into doing things better than they have been done to date. Our narrative will build on what has been achieved in recent years, it will be a narrative of opportunities.
Take the Florence Barracks Project, a project designed to breathe new life into disused army buildings, adapting them to new uses such as social housing and services for the community. Not a single square metre of new ground will be built on. We will be the first city in Italy to do this, where “this” stands for an overall impact in terms of jobs worth 395 million euros. Or take the G8, or our determination to make the most of EU funding, or such important issues as culture. Take the huge public infrastructure programme, starting with tramlines 2 and 3.
This will be the largest urban infrastructure project ever seen in Florence in the past 100 years. We can not afford to waste these opportunities. Our city is – and is going to continue to be – an ambitious city. And we are going to be ambitious too, accomplishing more than has ever been achieved before.
