I never imagined that I’d be hearing my voice speaking Italian on air for the entire population of Florence to hear. For the past 19 Thanksgiving mornings of my life I had been lazing around, getting ready to eat: now, for the 20th, I was rehearsing for my debut on Italian radio. In our Italian language class for Smith College’s Junior Year Abroad, we aren’t just studying grammar; we’re expanding our capacities to express ourselves in a foreign language. In order to understand the different levels of communication present in the Italian language, we have visited the office of the Florence Courier and listened to experts in journalism and media. This Thanksgiving we appeared as guests on Lady Radio, a local radio station that covers news, sports, and music. They call themselves the “happy medium” radio, offering both information and entertainment. Our class of thirteen huddled around a long table in their brainstorming room: our mission was to talk about our experience studying here in Florence. It was an opportunity to practice our now two and a half years of Italian in a new way: on the radio, uncharted territory for most of us, even in America. We divided ourselves into groups to describe a typical day in Florence: the food we eat, what we do for fun, and last but not least, Thanksgiving. At the end we all gathered in the recording studio for the live segment, and to hear our prerecorded segments edited together. Our American expedition into Lady Radio included an interview of two of my classmates and the vice mayor of Florence, who talked about the city’s relationship with American students. Beginning with choruses of “Happy Thanksgiving,” my friends described their family traditions and the history of the holiday. My professor, also in the room, explained that later we would all gather together, students and professors, for a Thanksgiving meal. That night, we ate an authentic American Thanksgiving dinner, complete with some Italian goat cheese and bread, made by our director. Stuffed and content after a night of charades and impersonations, I was incredibly thankful for this makeshift family.

Non avrei mai pensato di sentire la mia voce che parlava italiano ad una radio che trasmette i suoi programmi in tutta Firenze.  Le mattine delle mie ultime 19  Feste del Ringraziamento  le ho sempre passate a oziare a letto e a prepararmi per la grande abbuffata. Ora, per la ventesima, stavo invece facendo le prove per il mio debutto a una stazione radio italiana. Nel nostro corso di lingua richiesto dal mio programma di un anno di studio in Italia dello Smith College non impariamo semplicemente le regole di grammatica, ampliamo anche le nostre capacità di espressione in una lingua straniera. Per capire i diversi livelli di comunicazione presenti nella lingua italiana abbiamo fatto visita agli uffici del Corriere Fiorentino ed abbiamo ascoltato esperti di giornalismo e mass media. Il giorno della Festa del Ringraziamento, abbiamo partecipato come ospiti ad una trasmissione radiofonica di Lady Radio, una stazione radio che si occupa di notizie, sport e musica. Si autodefiniscono la giusta via di mezzo radiofonica che offre informazioni e spettacolo. Le tredici studentesse del mio corso si sono strette attorno ad un lungo tavolo nella loro stanza del brainstorming: la nostra missione era parlare della nostra esperienza di studio a Firenze. Dopo aver studiato l’italiano per due anni e mezzo questa era un’opportunità di praticarlo in un nuovo modo: parlando alla radio, un territorio sconosciuto per quasi tutte noi, anche negli Stati Uniti. Ci siamo divise in gruppi per descrivere la nostra giornata tipica a Firenze, raccontando quello che mangiamo, cosa facciamo per divertirci, e per ultimo, ma non per questo meno importante, abbiamo parlato della Festa del Ringraziamento.

Alla fine ci siamo riunite tutte nello studio per le registrazioni in diretta e per sentire le parti che avevamo registrato prima individualente ed ora erano state montate insieme. La nostra spedizione americana a Lady Radio ha incluso anche un intervista di due mie compagne e della Vice Sindaca di Firenze che ha parlato dei rapporti della città con gli studenti americani. Cominciando con cori di “Happy Thanksgiving, le mie compagne hanno descritto le tradizioni delle loro famiglie e la storia di questa celebrazione. La nostra professoressa, che era nella sala di registrazione ha spiegato che più tardi ci saremmo tutti ritrovati, studentesse e professori, per una cena di Thanksgiving. Quella sera la nostra direttrice ci ha preparato  un’autentica cena americana per la Festa del Ringraziamento ma con l’aggiunta di pane e formaggio di capra,  un tocco italiano. Strapiena e contenta dopo una serata di giochi e imitazioni, ero incredibilmente grata per questa famiglia di amici.
