A lesson of good manners from Wayne James

Manly Manners: Lifestyle & Modern Etiquette for the Young Man of the 21^st Century is a very interesting and enjoyable book, written by Wayne James, former US senator who has always had a passion for literature, so much that he decided to write a book for the young gentlemen of our times, offering them advice. “As a child I used to read many publications on etiquette, that were in the house of my family in the Virgin Islands, where I was born, and over the years I realized that in reality these texts were dedicating very little space for us men, so I decided to write a book that should become an ideal travel companion for every man, being able to offer my experience, the fruit of my many travels and what I have learned firsthand, thus suggesting how to behave better in any circumstance without incurring any embarrassment”. There are two sections of the book: “The first concerns the spirituality of us men, the second the outward appearance”. Wayne correctly states that “ethics come before label, and common sense is the basis for many things, if not for everything; a man who has all the characteristics of a formally correct behavior, but lacks genuine feelings at the base of that behavior, has only the appearance of a gentleman”. Manly Manners is “a book that does not intend to preach”, if anything, the goal is to prove that“every man is capable of becoming a true gentleman and that there is nothing wrong in being a Gentleman”. The book argues that “etiquette can be very thrilling!”. From considerations related to good manners shown in public places or within a community, Wayne will lead us on an unusual journey, presenting a, sometimes necessary, debate, about the different habits of some of the great cultures in the world. The book, precisely because of its international applicability, shows without any effort, and in a very realistic way, that “people around the world are much more similar than they are different”.“Bon Voyage!”.

Manly Manners will be released by the publishing house Pearson, a subsidiary of Penguin Books, in five languages (English, French, Portuguese, Italian and Spanish) and will be available worldwide in hardcover, paperback and as an e-book on Amazon.

Manly Manners: Lifestyle & Modern Etiquette for the Young Man of the 21^st Century è un libro decisamente interessante e piacevole scritto da Wayne James, già senatore statunitense che da sempre coltiva la passione per la letteratura, tanto da decidere di scrivere un libro rivolto ai giovani gentiluomini del nostro presente, offrendo loro consigli utili. “Da bambino ho letto molte pubblicazioni sul Galateo, si trovavano a casa della mia famiglia nelle Isole Vergini, dove sono nato, e negli anni mi sono accorto che in realtà quei testi dedicavamo poco spazio a noi uomini, quindi ho pensato di scrivere un libro che divenisse un ideale compagno di viaggio per ogni uomo, per poter offrire la mia esperienza, frutto dei miei tanti viaggi e di ciò che ho appreso in prima persona, così da suggerire come comportarsi al meglio in ogni circostanza senza incorrere in alcun imbarazzo”. Due sono le sezioni che compongono il libro: “la prima riguarda la spiritualità di noi uomini, la seconda l’aspetto esteriore”. Wayne afferma giustamente che “l’etica viene prima dell’etichetta, ed il buonsenso è alla base di molto se non di tutto; un uomo che possiede tutte le caratteristiche di un comportamento formalmente corretto, ma manca di sentimenti genuini alla base del suo comportamento, ha solo l’apparenza del gentiluomo”.

Manly Manners è “un libro che non intende fare la predica”, semmai l’obiettivo è quello di dimostrare che “ogni uomo è capace di trasformarsi in un vero gentiluomo e che non c’ènientedi male o compassato nell’essere un Signore”. Il libro sostiene che il galateo può essere anche molto eccitante! Dalle considerazioni inerenti le buone maniere da tenersi nei luoghi pubblici o all’interno di una comunità, Wayne ci condurrà in un viaggio inconsueto presentando un dibattito, talvolta necessario, sulle diverse abitudini di alcune delle grandi culture del mondo. Il libro, proprio in forza della sua applicabilità internazionale, dimostra senza alcuno sforzo, ed in modo decisamente realistico, che “le persone di tutto il mondo sono molto più simili di quanto siano diverse”.
