International Women’s Day

Festa della Donna may be celebrated off and on throughout the rest of the world, but in Italy International Women’s Day is a serious event, celebrating women around the world and giving men and women alike a more meaningful opportunity to celebrate and support the women in their lives. Festa della Donna occurs annually on March 8, and events vary year to year. Many opt for a private celebration, but for those looking to get out and about choices will certainly abound. Events range from merely fun to having more lasting significance.Last year a notable event held for International Women’s Day was a write-in by the Advancing Women Artists Foundation where volunteers created and updated Wikipedia pages to include more female representation. Women are also typically granted free admission to Florence’s civic museums and the Torre di Arnolfo and Brancacci chapel. The date happens to also fall within the Fuori di Taste, a foodie event in Florence that hosts primarily paid-entry events and meals around the city for those looking to try unique dishes. Many shops like Vinoutlet and Laduree hosted special tastings around the time last year since March 8 falls on a weekend day. Special events occurring on March 8 this year include tastings along Borgo Ognissanti, special tasting menus in the evening at area restaurants and a variety of events at Stazione Leopolda. Last year many shops along the Oltrarno hosted tastings during the weekend and women were given special gifts and privileges, so it’s worth checking out if you will be in the area! One particularly notable event this year is Women Supporting Women’s Artisans against domestic violence showing. Artisans across Florence will come together to host the show, which costs a 12 euro admission fee which includes a drink and buffet, the same equivalent to going out for apertivo. The showing will raise funds to support Artemisia, which assists women and children to escape domestic violence.

Perhaps the sweetest gesture will be the simplest men across the city handing wives, daughters, sisters and mothers bunches of yellow mimosa flowers. It’s the only time of year you really see them in Florence, but they will blanket the city and many women will be carrying them by day’s end.

La “Festa della Donna” ècelebrata in ogni parte del mondo, ma in Italia è un evento particolarmente sentito, che celebra tutte le donne del mondo, dando alle persone un’opportunità più significativa per sostenere le donne nella loro vita quotidiana. La “Festa della Donna” èl’8 marzo diogni anno e gli eventi previsti variano di anno in anno. Molti preferiscono una festa privata, ma per coloro che intendono uscire, le possibilità di scelta saranno certamente molte. Gli eventi spaziano dal semplice divertimento a quelli che conservano un significato più consapevole e profondo. L’anno scorso un evento di notevole spessore per la “Festa della Donna” èstato promosso da Advancing Women Artists Foundation, per il quale le volontarie hanno creato e aggiornato le pagine di Wikipedia per includervi una maggiore rappresentanza femminile. Generalmente, in questa data, alle donne è concesso l’ingresso gratuito ai musei civici di Firenze, alla Torre di Arnolfo ed alla Cappella Brancacci. Quest’anno la data ricorre durante Fuori di Taste, un evento gastronomico di Firenze che ospita eventi di degustazione all’interno della città, per tutti coloro che desiderano provare piatti unici. Molti negozi, come Vinoutlet e Laduree, l’anno scorso hanno offerto assaggi speciali proprio per l’8 marzo che cade in un giorno del fine settimana. Eventi speciali per l’8 marzo di quest’anno comprendono degustazioni nella zona di Borgo Ognissanti dove la sera, presso i ristoranti della zona, si potranno gustare particolari menu e partecipare ad una serie di eventi diversi presso la Stazione Leopolda. L’anno scorso, durante il fine settimana, molti negozi dell’Oltrarno hanno riservato alle donne doni e speciali privilegi, quindi vale la pena verificare se si potrà essere in zona! Un evento particolarmente importante quest’anno è realizzato da Women Supporting Women’s Artisans contro la violenza domestica. Artigiani in tutta Firenze si riuniranno per ospitare una mostra, che ha un biglietto d’ingresso di € 12,00 che include un drink ed un buffet, l’equivalente di uscire per un aperitivo. Il proposito è raccogliere fondi per sostenere Artemisia, associazione no-profit che assiste donne e bambini contro la violenza domestica. Forse il gesto più dolce sarà quello più semplice da parte degli uomini, ovvero regalare alle proprie mogli, figlie, sorelle e madri mazzi di fiori di mimosa. Questo è l’unico momento dell’anno in cui si possono vedere fiorite a Firenze, ma ricopriranno la città e molte donne li porteranno con sé fino alla fine della giornata.
