N.I.C.E. – New Italian Cinema Events Passion for cinema and social commitment

N.I.C.E. – New Italian Cinema Events, the already historic Florentine cultural association founded in 1991 and directed by Viviana del Bianco and Grazia Santini, that is responsible for disseminating and promoting the new Italian cinema festival, organized every year around the world, is preparing for the Russian stage, scheduled in April. The start will be given in Moscow (8 to 13) and St. Petersburg (11 to 17), and it will continue in other locations of the Federation. As every year, the program will be full of screenings and events, held, as usual, in the presence of the filmmakers. The event will be in collaboration with the City of Florence and the Tuscany Region. Russia will follow the other part of the festival, the American one, who, along with China, will complete the international tour of N.I.C.E. In November, the United States has welcomed the festival in New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Washington. In addition to taking the Italian cinema abroad, N.I.C.E. promotes for more than twenty years the city of Florence, not only by actively participating in its cultural life, but, above all, through the establishment of the Prize Nice “The City of Florence” to the winning American film of the event, decreed by the public. The award ceremony is held annually at the Odeon Cinema, at the end of the “50 Days of International Cinema”, as part of a gala, widely followed by the public and by the national press. Within the same evening, the award “City of Florence” was granted for best film “Giuria degli studenti delle scuole Toscane”, awarded by five Tuscan schools involved in Florence’s City hall project “Le Chiavi della Città”. A reality, of middle schools and high schools (also of the foreign institutes) found on the Florentine territory, where N.I.C.E. develops an intense activity through lectures and meetings that have been going on for more than ten years, enabling students to deal directly with the experts and learn the tools necessary in order to read a film and understand the processes, from subject to distribution in the halls, and allowing them to participate in various projects. N.I.C.E. also organizes events such as the “Estate Fiorentina” (part of the “Apriti cinema!”), “Musica dal grande schermo” (last fall organized at Teatro della Pergola with the occasion of the General States of the Italian Language in the World), and this year in the Fabiani Halls of Palazzo Medici Riccardi, headquarters of the Metropolitan City of Florence, L’armonia della natura, a retrospective exhibition of Hans Schirmacher. Florentine by adoption, Schirmacher has devoted much of his artistic research to landscape painting (over 40 works). The exhibition takes an ideal voyage to places more or less close to the city, physical and mental spaces, through which human history and the art of the painter is unraveled. Coastal and forestry landscapes, as well as urban visions are part of the exhibition, embracing in a perfect synthesis a snowy winter in Jaroslav (Russia) and the islands of the South Italy. For three years, N.I.C.E., in collaboration with institutions and associations present in the area and not only, organizes conferences and initiatives on the human rights and violence against women issue. Because of its strong predisposition to intercultural exchange and experience in foreign and multicultural contexts, NICE is approaching more and more social issues. Due to the very nature of their work in film, the association is always in contact with directors who have dealt with these kind of issues in their work: recent examples are Valeria Golino with Miele and Simone Borrelli with Eddy (official film of the 2015 Human Rights Council in Europe). For this reason, the association is extremely concerned and takes an active part in raising awareness about these important issues. One of their last commitments was the “Women and Violence: information or speculation?” conference, particularly relevant because it analyzed how the association is linked to the world of communication and showed its way of being represented and described through the media channels, questioning on how to achieve information and training on this delicate issue.

N.I.C.E. – New Italian Cinema Events, la ormai storica associazione culturale fiorentina nata nel 1991 e diretta da Viviana del Bianco e Grazia Santini, che si occupa di diffondere e promuovere il nuovo cinema italiano in festival organizzati ogni anno in giro per il mondo, si prepara alla tappa russa, prevista per aprile. Si inizierà da Mosca (dall’8 al 13) e San Pietroburgo (dall’11 al 17), per poi proseguire in altre località della Federazione. Come ogni anno, il programma sarà ricco di proiezioni ed eventi, svolti, come di consueto, alla presenza dei registi. In collaborazione con il Comune di Firenze e la Regione Toscana. La Russia segue l’altra parte del festival, quella americana, che, insieme alla Cina, completa il tour internazionale di N.I.C.E. A novembre, gli Stati Uniti hanno accolto il festival a New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia e Washington. Oltre al cinema italiano all’estero, N.I.C.E. promuove da più di vent’anni la città di Firenze, non solo partecipando attivamente alla sua vita culturale, ma, soprattutto, attraverso l’istituzione del Premio Nice “Città di Firenze” al film vincitore della manifestazione statunitense, decretato dal pubblico. La cerimonia di consegna del premio si svolge ogni anno al Cinema Odeon, in conclusione della “50 Giorni di Cinema Internazionale”, nell’ambito di una serata di gala molto seguita sia dal pubblico che dalla stampa nazionale. All’interno della stessa serata, ha istituito il Premio “Città di Firenze” per miglior film “Giuria degli studenti delle scuole Toscane”, assegnato da cinque scuole toscane aderenti al progetto “Le Chiavi della Città” del Comune di Firenze. Una realtà, quella delle scuole medie e superiori (oltre agli Istituti stranieri) del territorio fiorentino, dove N.I.C.E. svolge un’intensa attività di lezioni e incontri che durano ormai da più di dieci anni, dando la possibilità agli studenti di confrontarsi direttamente con gli addetti ai lavori e di apprendere gli strumenti per leggere un film e capirne i processi, dal soggetto fino alla distribuzione nelle sale, e partecipando a diversi progetti. Sempre in città, N.I.C.E. organizza eventi come l’“Estate Fiorentina” (all’interno della rassegna “Apriti cinema!”), “Musica dal grande schermo” (lo scorso autunno al Teatro della Pergola in occasione degli Stati Generali della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo), e quest’anno nelle Sale Fabiani di Palazzo Medici Riccardi, sede della Città Metropolitana di Firenze, L’armonia della natura, mostra antologica di Hans Schirmacher. Fiorentino di adozione, Schirmacher ha dedicato gran parte della sua ricerca artistica alla pittura di paesaggio (oltre 40 opere). La mostra compie un ideale viaggio in luoghi più o meno vicini, spazi fisici e mentali, attraverso cui si dipana la storia umana e artistica del pittore. Paesaggi costieri, boschivi oltre a visioni urbane, che abbracciano idealmente in una sintesi perfetta l’inverno di una innevata Jaroslav (Russia) e le isole del Sud Italia. Da tre anni N.I.C.E., in collaborazione con Istituzioni, associazioni e realtà presenti sul territorio e non solo, organizza conferenze e iniziative sul tema dei diritti umani e della violenza sulle donne. Proprio per la sua forte predisposizione allo scambio interculturale e alla sua esperienza in contesti esteri e multiculturali, N.I.C.E. si è avvicinato sempre più ai temi del sociale. Grazie alla natura stessa del proprio lavoro nel cinema, è in contatto da sempre con registi che si sono occupati di queste tematiche nei loro lavori: esempi recenti sono Valeria Golino con Miele e Simone Borrelli con Eddy (film ufficiale dei Diritti umani 2015 per il Consiglio d’Europa). Per questo l’associazione è estremamente interessata ed è parte attiva nella sensibilizzazione verso queste tematiche. Uno degli ultimi impegni è stato il convegno “Violenza e donne: informazione o speculazione?”, particolarmente rilevante perché ha analizzato come essa sia legata al mondo della comunicazione e al suo modo di essere rappresentata e descritta attraverso i media, interrogandosi su come fare informazione e formazione su questo delicato tema.
