Giovanni Boldini – “Lo spettacolo della modernità”

“C’est un classique!”. This is the recognition given to Giovanni Boldini (Ferrara 1842 – Paris 1931), ever since the first posthumous exhibition that was held in Paris a few months after his death. “The classic of a painting genre”, insisted on that occasion Filippo de Pisis. After the show dedicated in 2012 to Wildt (who in 2015 will be the protagonist of an exhibition organized by the Musée d’Orsay at the Orangerie in Paris in collaboration with the City of Forlì and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Forlì), and the next two on the twentieth century and Liberty, the Foundation and the Museums of San Domenico di Forlì continue their exploration, through new studies and rediscoveries of little-known works, from the figurative culture of the nineteenth and twentieth century, proposing for the 2015 exhibition season, a more thorough review of the story of Giovanni Boldini, certainly one of the largest and most prolific Italian artists living in Paris. It is in this ideal space created by the relationship between Forlì and Paris that this initiative takes place. In his long career, characterized by different in between periods, that testify to an undeniable creative genius and a continuous experimental momentum that will exhaust itself on the eve of World War One, the Ferrarese painter has enjoyed an extraordinary luck, when often stirring heated conversations among critics and the public. Loved and discussed by his first real interlocutors, like Telemaco Signorini and Diego Martelli, was later understood and adopted in the most successful years known by the sophisticated Paris, the times of the brothers Goncourt, and Proust, Degas and Helleu, of the esthetician Montesquiou and the eccentric Colette. Compared to recent exhibitions that regard the artist, this exhibition differs for a more detailed and thorough vision on his diverse creative activity, having the purpose to valorize not only paintings, but also the extraordinary production of graphics, drawings, watercolors and engravings. The most recent research by Francesca Dini (curator of the exhibition along with Fernando Mazzocca), allows the enrichment of this path, with the presentation of new works, both on the painting side but in particular, on the graphics one. One of the exhibition’s strong points, if not the decisive one, will be the reconsideration of the first season of Boldini, in the years between 1864 to 1870, spent mostly in Florence, being very close to the Macchiaioli.

“C’est un classique!”. È questo il riconoscimento dato a Giovanni Boldini (Ferrara 1842 – Parigi 1931), fin dalla prima esposizione postuma che si tenne a Parigi a pochi mesi dalla morte. “Il classico di un genere di pittura”, ribadì in quella occasione Filippo de Pisis. Dopo la rassegna dedicata nel 2012 a Wildt (che sarà protagonista nel 2015 di una mostra realizzata dal Musée d’Orsay all’Orangerie di Parigi in collaborazione con la Città di Forlì e la Fondazione Cassa dei Risparmi di Forlì), e le due successive sul Novecento ed il Liberty, la Fondazione e i Musei di San Domenico di Forlì proseguono nell’esplorazione, attraverso nuovi studi e la riscoperta di opere poco note, della cultura figurativa tra Otto e Novecento, proponendo per la stagione espositiva del 2015 una approfondita rivisitazione della vicenda di Giovanni Boldini, certamente il più grande e prolifico tra gli artisti italiani residenti a Parigi. È in questo ideale spazio di rapporto tra Forlì e Parigi che si colloca questa iniziativa. Nella sua lunghissima carriera, caratterizzata da periodi tra loro diversi a testimonianza di un indiscutibile genio creativo e di un continuo slancio sperimentale che si andrà esaurendo alla vigilia della Pima Guerra Mondiale, il pittore ferrarese ha goduto di una straordinaria fortuna, pur suscitando spesso accese polemiche, tra la critica ed il pubblico. Amato e discusso dai suoi primi veri interlocutori, come Telemaco Signorini e Diego Martelli, fu poi compreso e adottato negli anni del maggiore successo dalla Parigi più sofisticata, quella dei fratelli Goncourt e di Proust, di Degas e di Helleu, dell’esteta Montesquiou e della eccentrica Colette. Rispetto alle recenti mostre sull’artista, questa rassegna si differenzia per una visione più articolata e approfondita della sua multiforme attività creativa, intendendo valorizzare non solo i dipinti, ma anche la straordinaria produzione grafica, tra disegni, acquerelli e incisioni. Le ricerche più recenti di Francesca Dini (curatrice della mostra insieme a Fernando Mazzocca), consentono di arricchire il percorso con la presentazione di nuove opere, sia sul versante pittorico che, in particolare, su quello della grafica. Uno di punti di maggior forza, se non quello decisivo, della mostra sarà la riconsiderazione della prima stagione di Boldini negli anni che vanno dal 1864 al 1870, trascorsi prevalentemente a Firenze a stretto contatto con i Macchiaioli.
