The 68th Cannes Film Festival

The movie enthusiasts are already excited and, as usual they will form a crowd in front of the “red carpet’” to applaud the stars present at the most prestigious European cinema festival that will open on May 13 and will end the 24. Eleven days during which there will be presented the best movies that have been produced all over the world and every participant will dream to bring home their “Golden Palm”, an award almost as prestigious as the Oscar. Brothers Joel and Ethan Coen have been called to preside as jury. Two brothers, regular guests of the festival with their works, who said they were honored and very happy for the task received. Among other things, this year the celebration of an anniversary will take place: 120 years from the invention of the cinema, an invention made by two other famous brothers, Luis and Augustus Lumière and like, the direction of the festival writes in a statement… “the festival will be pleased to recognize, trough the Coen brothers, the work of all brothers present in cinema who, since the invention of the Lumière, have enriched its history, as the Tuscan brothers Paolo and Vittorio Taviani did, who won the Golden Palm in 1976, the same as the Coen brothers who received it in 1991 and the Dardenne brothers winners of two Golden Palm in 1985 and 2005”.

But to whom will go the next Palm? For the moment we don’t know who will be selected to participate in the competition. There are rumors about a very well-known group of Italians…. Paolo Sorrentino with his last film La Giovinezza, Matteo Garrone with Il racconto dei racconti, Marco Bellocchio with L’ultimo vampiro and there are also whispers about Luca Guadagnino with A Bigger Splash and lastly, without neglecting Nanni Moretti with the film Mia Madre. Moretti is a director who has always been received with great sympathy on the Croisette (he won the Palme in 2001 with La stanza del figlio). But there are also movies, of other internationally known directors such as: George Clooney, Sean Penn, Gus Van Sant, Stephen Frears, Abdellatif Kechiche (the latter won the Palm two years ago with the film La vita di Adele who caused a great scandal). At the moment it is only possible to make assumptions, but the names that circulate are already a guarantee of success for a festival that, as always, will not disappoint those who will have the fortune to attend.

I cinefili sono già in fibrillazione e, come al solito, faranno ressa davanti al “red carpet” per applaudire le star presenti al più prestigioso festival cinematografico europeo che si aprirà il 13 maggio e chiuderà il 24. Saranno 11 giorni durante i quali verrà presentato quanto di meglio è stato prodotto in tutto il mondo ed ogni partecipante sogna di portarsi a casa la “Palma d’Oro”, premio prestigioso quasi quanto l’Oscar. I fratelli Joel ed Ethan Coen sono stati chiamati a presiedere la giuria. Due fratelli, abituali ospiti del festival con le loro opere, che si sono detti onorati e felicissimi per l’incarico ricevuto. Tra l’altro questo anno verrà celebrato un anniversario: i 120 anni dall’invenzione del cinema di altri due celebri fratelli, Luis e Augustus Lumière e così, scrive la direzione del festival in un comunicato “…il festival sarà lieto di riconoscere, attraverso i fratelli Coen, il lavoro di tutti i fratelli nel cinema che, fin dalla invenzione dei Lumière, hanno arricchito la sua storia, come i fratelli toscani Paolo e Vittorio Taviani che vinsero la Palma d’Oro nel 1976, gli stessi fratelli Coen che l’ottennero nel 1991 ed i fratelli Dardenne vincitori di ben due Palme, nel 1988 e nel 2005. Ma a chi andrà la prossima Palma? Per il momento non sappiamo ancora chi sarà selezionato per partecipare alla competizione. Molto nutrito è il gruppo degli italiani già ben noti di cui si mormora… Paolo Sorrentino con il suo ultimo film La giovinezza, Matteo Garrone con Il racconto dei racconti, Marco Bellocchio con L’ultimo vampiro e si parlaanche di Luca Guadagnino con A Bigger Splash senza trascurare Nanni Moretti con il film Mia madre. Morettiè un regista che è sempre accolto con grande simpatia sulla Croisette (vinse la Palma nel 2001 con La stanza del figlio). Ma ci sono anche film, di cui si parla molto bene, di altri registi internazionalmente noti come: George Clooney, Sean Penn, Gus Van Sant, Stephen Frears, Abdellatif Kechiche (quest’ultimo vinse la Palma due anni fa con il film La vita di Adele che fece scandalo). Al momento è possibile fare solo delle ipotesi ma i nomi che circolano sono già una garanzia di successo per un festival che, come sempre, non deluderà chi ha la fortuna di parteciparvi.
