A few words with Stefania Ippoliti A new season rich of beautiful cinema

Stefania Ippoliti is a splendid, fascinating lady, admired by all for her charm but also for her intelligence and versatility in various cultural fields where she has always been distinguished.

Her professional career is very interesting and it is with extreme simplicity that she tells me about her life.

“My parents have taught me to consider life as a school, a long process of growth, and they have always encouraged me to read a lot; thus, from a young age when I was coming home from school, I loved to read texts written by authors from all countries, curious about how the world has been built. By nature I am inclined towards communication and dialogue and I have understood that I love life and people. It’s true that as a child I read everything, but while growing up I became more selective. I love American literature (Fitzgerald, Roth…) and Israeli literature after I met my husband Giorgio Van Straten who has introduced me to the Hebrew cultural world, animated by poets and writers”. She seems to abandon herself on an intimate memory lane: “When I was President of Florence’s Confesercenti during the Social Forum, there were difficult and panic moments...” and for a second she seems far away and I almost feel like an intruder. She feels my embarrassment and continues: “Sometimes in life things happen by chance”. I note that it is very difficult for me to picture this sophisticated woman in the role of President of the Confesercenti and we both burst into laughter thinking how strange are some circumstances in life, because, like in a movie, Stefania has become an active part in the Florentine and international cultural life today, and she plays the role of responsible for the cinematic area of Fondazione Sistema Toscana and president of the Italian Film Commission. “It is a service that has been recently introduced, around ten years ago, which aims to build in different territories the best professional logistic, economic and technique conditions for film, TV series, fiction, documentaries and video clip production, focusing most of all to promote the young generation”. In these last few years, the situation of the Florentine cinematic landscape has changed, reserving positive surprises: “It is like that in fact! We have started searching to build a dialogue through various international Florentine festivals, reuniting them in a unique frame called “50 Days”. With courage, 9 years ago she has created a unique experience in the international and national cultural landscape. “Yes, it is true, 50 Days have given a great impulse, great promotion and communication with the major initiatives planned, offering each year a season rich of beautiful cinema. In all these years, each edition has recalled more than 50.000 viewers attracted to the programming consisting of feature films, short films, documentary-fiction, art videos, previews, meetings with authors, debates, social occasions, programming that has been prolonged for several years inside the Florentine Summer. I always wanted the seventh art to have a place of its own, that a point of reference would be created for Tuscany with a culture value of the utmost importance: 50 Days will be held at Cinema Odeon for the last time and starting 2016 the new hall will be inaugurated in via Cavour designed to host the festival, exhibitions…the “Company” finally found its home”. I wonder if she has any free time or what she does to relax. “I don’t have any free time” – she answers laughing – “but obviously whenever I can I go to the cinema!”.

Steania Ippoliti è una splendida, affascinante signora ammirata da tutti per il suo charme ma anche per la sua intelligenza e la sua versatilità nei vari campi della cultura dove si è sempre distinta. Il suo percorso professionale è quanto mai interessante ed è con estrema semplicità che mi racconta la sua vita. “I miei genitori mi hanno insegnato a considerare la vita come una scuola, un lungo percorso di crescita e mi hanno sempre incoraggiato a leggere molto; quindi fin da piccola, quando tornavo da scuola, amavo leggere i testi di tanti autori di ogni paese, curiosa di comprendere come è fatto il mondo. Io, per natura, sono portata alla comunicazione e al dialogo ed ho capito che la vita e le persone mi piacciono moltissimo. È vero, da piccola leggevo di tutto, crescendo sono diventata più selettiva. Amo molto la letteratura americana (Fitzgerald, Roth…) e israeliana, dopo l’incontro con mio marito Giorgio Van Straten che mi ha introdotta nel mondo culturale ebraico, animato da poeti e scrittori”. Sembra abbandonarsi all’onda di ricordi intimi: “Quando ero Presidente della Confesercenti di Firenze durante il Social Forum, erano momenti di panico e difficili…” e per un momento mi appare lontana e mi sento quasi un’intrusa. Lei avverte il mio imbarazzo e riprende: “Nella vita spesso le cose accadono per circostanze fortuite”. Osservo che mi è molto difficile immaginare questa sofisticata signora nei panni della presidente di Confesercenti e scoppiamo tutte e due a ridere considerando quanto sono strani i casi della vita perché, come in un film, Stefania oggi è divenuta parte attiva della vita culturale fiorentina e internazionale, per il ruolo che ricopre come responsabile area cinema della Fondazione Sistema Toscana e presidente dell’Italian Film Commission. “È un servizio di recente istituzione, circa dieci anni, che si pone l’obiettivo di costruire nei diversi territori le migliori condizioni logistiche, professionali, economiche e tecniche per la produzione di film, telefilm, fiction, documentari e videoclip rivolti soprattutto alla promozione dei giovani”. In questi ultimi anni, nel panorama cinematografico fiorentino, la situazione è molto cambiata, riservando sorprese positive: “In effetti è cosi! Abbiamo cominciato dal cercare di costruire un dialogo tra i vari festival internazionali fiorentini, riunendoli in un’unica cornice chiamata “50 giorni”. Con coraggio ha creato 9 anni fa un’esperienza unica nel panorama culturale nazionale e internazionale. “Sì, è vero, la 50 giorni ha dato un forte impulso è una forte promozione e comunicazione alle importanti iniziative in programma offrendo ogni anno una stagione ricca di bellissimo cinema. In tutti questi anni, ogni edizione ha richiamato più di 50.000 spettatori attratti da una programmazione composta da lungometraggi, cortometraggi, docufiction, video d’artista, anteprime, incontri con gli autori, dibattiti, momenti conviviali, programmazione che si è prolungata da qualche anno all’interno dell’Estate Fiorentina. Ho sempre desiderato che la settima arte avesse un luogo tutto suo, che si creasse un punto di riferimento per tutta la Toscana con un valore culturale di estrema importanza: la 50 giorni sarà, per l’ultimo anno, al Cinema Odeon e, a partire dal 2016, verrà inaugurata in via Cavour la nuova sala destinata ad ospitare i festival, le rassegne… la “Compagnia” trova finalmente casa. Mi chiedo se ha del tempo libero e cosa fa per rilassarsi. “Non ho tempo libero” – mi risponde ridendo – “ma naturalmente appena posso vado al cinema!”.
