Sixty-two paintings from America’s first museum of modern art. A treasured Washington, D.C. institution opened to the public in 1921, The Phillips Collection was conceived by its founder, Duncan Phillips, as “an intimate museum combined with an experiment station” in the nation’s capital where the art of one’s time would be exhibited in the company of well-known masterpieces. The Phillips Collection is recognized around the world today for its premiere collection of modern and contemporary art. As it approaches its centenary, the Phillips has organized a landmark traveling exhibition from its rich holdings to be presented for the first time in the Italian capital.

This special exhibition of European and American painting is arranged thematically from the early 19th century through the mid-20th Century postwar period. Visitors will encounter a stunning array of masterpieces from the 19th century by El Greco, Ingres, Delacroix, Goya, Courbet, Daumier in dialogue with the great French impressionist masters Manet, Cézanne, Degas, van Gogh, Monet, and Sisley. Central to the exhibition are modern masters who have shaped the artistic vision of the 20th century, including Bonnard, Braque, Gris, Kandinsky, Kokoschka, Matisse, Modigliani, Picasso, Soutine, and Vuillard, along with the Americans Arthur Dove and Georgia O´Keeffe.

Sessantadue dipinti provenienti dal primo museo americano di arte moderna. Nelle intenzioni del fondatore Duncan Phillips, la prestigiosa istituzione, inaugurata a Washington D.C. nel 1921, avrebbe dovuto diventare “un museo intimo e raccolto, ma anche sede di sperimentazioni” in cui presentare l´arte contemporanea accanto a capolavori più noti. Oggi la Phillips Collection è una raccolta di opere d´arte moderna e contemporanea apprezzata in tutto il mondo. Nell´imminenza del suo centesimo anniversario, il museo ha organizzato un´importante mostra itinerante nel corso della quale il pubblico avrà per la prima volta l´occasione di ammirare una parte della sua ricca collezione nella capitale italiana. Questa straordinaria mostra dedicata alla pittura europea e americana è organizzata per temi e copre un periodo che va dall´inizio dell´Ottocento fino al secondo dopoguerra. In mostra i capolavori del 19° secolo, El Greco, Ingres, Delacroix, Goya, Courbet, Daumier che dialogano con i grandi maestri dell’impressionismo francese, Manet, Cézanne, Degas, Van Gogh, Monet e Sisley. Aspetto centrare della mostra è costituito dai maestri moderni che hanno plasmato la visione artistica del 20° secolo, Bonnard, Braque, Gris, Kandinsky, Kokoschka, Matisse, Modigliani, Picasso, Soutine, e Vuillard, con gli americani Arthur Dove e Georgia O´Keeffe.
