And the Oscar goes to…

At the 73rd edition of the Golden Globes, which are, after the Oscars, the most important international movie awards, Aleajandro Gonzàles Inàrrito’s film has received twelve nominations. The attribution of the awards is made by foreign journalists who are usually residents of Los Angeles and belong to the HFPA, “Hollywood Foreign Press Association”.

The association was born from the need to show the world the best American movies of the year and the statue that is handed over to the winners represents a golden globe wrapped in a film strip. Starting 1955 the awards are granted not only to the movies but also to TV series, counting 25 categories, from which 11 for television productions and the rest for movies with a further evaluation, for films themselves, for actors/actresses and for “comedy” movies and those entitled “drama”. For those who have received the Golden Globe, the anxious await of the Oscars evening begins, while the movies are projected in the cinema halls from all over the world and people rush to see them, since the Oscar nomination already guaranties a good product. This year the attention is focused mainly on Leonardo Di Caprio and his The Revenant, which finally this year hasn’t disappointed the audience and experts. He never hid the fact that the await for the Oscars has always made him a little nervous and has declared (fairly) that “whomever says they are not nervous, they are lying”. After collecting a multitude of prestigious awards and five nominations, he smiles, happy for his victory. In the splendid setting of the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, everyone thought that it was time for him to crown his career with a well-deserved Oscar, both as an actor and as a man. Yet, he demonstrated excellent skills as an actor in his previous challenges too, like in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993, The Aviator in 2005, Blood Diamond in 2007, The Wolf of Wall Street in 2014. As he states, the latter was the bitterest defeat for his collaboration with Martin Scorsese, who was directing him for the fifth time and with whom he is bonded through a strong friendship. Di Caprio is not only a star with perfect features who drove girls crazy while holding Rose (Kate Winslet) in his arms on the Titanic. He is not only a great actor: he is part of an environmental foundation that carries his name and to which he donates a big part of his earnings, he loves animals and politically he supports the Democratic Party. This ecologist activism didn’t escape the gaze of Pope Francesco who gave him audience at the Vatican. But how is Leonardo Di Caprio in real life? Ever since he was a young boy he demonstrated his passion to interpret and tortured his parents to accompany him to auditions, wanting to become an actor with any cost and confident that he will make it. And so it was. Fortunately he has his weaknesses and obsessions that make him “human”: he is single but has always been besides beautiful women, some with whom he has lived stories which seemed to conclude in marriage but…he doesn’t feel ready to start a family. He spends a lot on works of art and admits that he has always wanted to make more money and be successful, but that this doesn’t have to become an obsession, he has the mania of collecting jackets (he owns hundreds, as long as it has a unique detail to differentiate it, it’s enough for him to want it), he is very disorganized, loves the company of his friends of whom he is followed even on set, deeply loves his work, he never holds back when it comes to shoot scenes for which are necessary skill, courage and sacrifice, and chooses to take part in important movies, directed by demanding directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Ridley Scott, Martin Scorsese and now Aleajandro Gonzàles Inàrrito where his body and tenacity were put to a great challenge.

Alla 73ma edizione dei Golden Globes che sono, dopo gli Oscar, i premi più importanti del cinema internazionale, il film di Aleajandro Gonzàles Inàrrito ha ottenuto ben dodici candidature. L’attribuzione dei premi viene fatta dai giornalisti stranieri che risiedono abitualmente a Los Angeles e appartengono alla HFPA che sta per “Hollywood Foreign Press Association”. L’associazione nacque dall’esigenza di segnalare al mondo intero i migliori film statunitensi dell’anno e la statuetta che viene consegnata ai premiati rappresenta infatti un globo d’oro con intorno una pellicola. Dal 1955 i premi vengono assegnati non solo ai film, ma anche alle serie televisive, le categorie sono 25, delle quali 11 per i prodotti televisivi ed i rimanenti per i film con un’ulteriore valutazione, per i film stessi, per gli attori/attrici interpreti e per i film del genere “comedy” (commedia) e quelli definiti “drama” (drammatici). Per chi ha ricevuto il Golden Globe inizia la trepidante attesa della notte degli Oscar e nel frattempo i film vengono proiettati nelle sale di tutto il mondo e la gente accorre a vederli, poiché la candidatura all’Oscar è già una garanzia di buon prodotto per un cinefilo.
Quest’anno l’attenzione era rivolta soprattutto a Leonardo Di Caprio ed al suo The Revenant, che finalmente non ha deluso pubblico e addetti ai lavori. Non ha mai nascosto che l’attesa degli Oscar lo abbia sempre reso un po’ agitato e ha dichiarato (giustamente) che “chi afferma di non essere nervoso racconta balle”. Dopo aver collezionato un’infinità di prestigiosi premi e ben cinque nomination, sorride felice per la sua vittoria. Nella fastosa cornice del Dolby Theatre di Los Angeles, tutti hanno pensato che era giunto il momento per lui di coronare la sua carriera con un Oscar ben meritato, come attore e come uomo. Eppure anche nelle precedenti prove dimostrava ottime capacità attoriali, come in Buon compleanno Mr. Grape del 1993, The Aviator del 2005, Blood Diamond del 2007 e The Wolf of Wall Street del 2014. Come racconta, quest’ultima era stata la sconfitta più bruciante per il suo sodalizio con Martin Scorsese che lo dirigeva per la quinta volta e con il quale ha più che una profonda amicizia. Di Caprio non è solo la star dai lineamenti perfetti che faceva impazzire le ragazzine quando sul ponte del Titanic stringeva tra le braccia Rose (Kate Winslet). E non è solo un bravo attore: è attivista di una fondazione ambientalista che porta il suo nome e alla quale devolve parte dei suoi ingenti guadagni, ama gli animali e politicamente sostiene il partito democratico. Questo attivismo ecologista non è sfuggito a Papa Francesco che gli ha dato udienza in Vaticano.
Ma nella vita normale come è Leonardo Di Caprio?
Fin da ragazzino dimostrava la sua passione per la recitazione e tormentava i suoi genitori per essere accompagnato alle audizioni, voleva diventare un attore ad ogni costo e ed era sicuro che ce l’avrebbe fatta. E così è stato. Per fortuna ha le sue debolezze e le sue manie che lo rendono “umano”: è single ma ha sempre al suo fianco bellissime donne, con alcune delle quali ha intrecciato anche storie che sembravano doversi concludere con il matrimonio ed invece… non si sente pronto a metter su famiglia.
Spende molto in opere d’arte e ammette di avere sempre voglia di fare più soldi e di avere successo ma che questo non deve divenire un’ossessione, ha la mania di collezionare giacche (ne possiede a centinaia, basta che una sia diversa in un piccolo dettaglio per desiderarla), è molto disordinato, ama la compagnia degli amici dai quali si fa seguire perfino sul set, ama molto il suo lavoro, non si tira indietro quando si tratta di girare scene per le quali occorre destrezza, coraggio e sacrificio e sceglie di fare film importanti, diretto da registi impegnativi come Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Ridley Scott, Martin Scorsese ed ora da Aleajandro Gonzàles Inàrrito con il quale il suo fisico e la sua tenacia sono stati messi a dura prova.
