On March 9, 2016, in the “Salone dei Cinquecento” (Palazzo Vecchio), an opening ceremony will launch the first Tuscan Anglo-American Festival in Florence in the presence of Dario Nardella (Florence Mayor), Cristina Giachi (Florence Deputy Mayor and City Councillor for School and Univerity Affairs), Abigal Rupp (U.S. Consul General in Florence), Portia Prebys (AACUPI President, that is, the Association of American University and College Programs in Italy), Julia Race (Director, British Institute of Florence), and Andrea Davis (Co-Director, Tuscan American Association). The organizers’ main goal is to highlight the strong link joining local U.S. university programs, Anglophone study centers, and Tuscany, thus promoting an ongoing dialogue that brings together institutions, scholars, teachers, and students from all over the world.

09_angeliEvery year, some 9.000 students attend the over 45 study abroad programs. There is no doubt that these students serve as the main ambassadors for Florence, Tuscany, and Italy in the whole world. The study program in Florence includes a number of significant formative experiences and volunteer activites, which leave students with lasting memories throughout their adult lives. Likewise, their presence on our soil is a precious economic and cultural resource in the widest and most noble sense of the term.
The thoughts that Fabrizio Ricciardelli (Director, Kent State University in Florence and AACUPI Co-Secretary), Joanne Maddux (Director, Fairfield University in Florence and AACUPI Co-Secretary), and Stefano Baldassarri (Director, ISI Florence) share with us as coordinators of the Tuscan Anglo-American Festival in Florence will help us better understand the goals of the many events making up this initiative on March 9 – 11.

The main purpose of the Tuscan Anglo-American Festival in Florence is to illustrate the many benefits that come with the presence of American students in Florence. To this purpose, we would like to share with the Florentines some of the activities that our universities promote on a dailiy basis and invite them to join us. The festival will be the opportunity to capitalize on the privileged relationship, at once personal and cultural, that for over a century now the U.S, Great Britain, and Florence have enjoyed. Each study abroad program in Florence is like a “happy island” working independently and with its own guidelines and goals. This is the first time that we have all joined forces to promote a broad project together. It is our hope that this may become an important event that all parties involved will want to propose a similar future event.

Since May 2014 we have worked on the idea of a biennial Tuscan Anglo-American Festival. The purpose is to inform people of what study abroad programs do (both in Florence and, more generally, in Tuscany) through a series of conferences, art exhibits, concerts, and seminars. We want to explain who we are, what our mission is, and what we do together with our students. It will be an opportunity to celebrate with the local community but also a great chance for participating programs to learn from one another and to strengthen their relationship. American programs and the British Institute open their doors to the city. We hope this will help American students and their Florentine peers to better know each other and to collaborate.

One of the crucial features characterizing the experience of American students while they are here to study is volunteer service to the community. Some of these activities include: teaching English to children, translating texts, removing graffiti from historic buildings in the city center together with “Angeli del Bello”, providing healthcare and first aid services with the “Arciconfraternita della Misericordia” and various kinds of support to Meyer Children’s Hospital. We trust that this festival will help eradicate many misleading stereotypes, which we too often find associated with the presence of North American students in our city.

Mercoledì 9 Marzo 2016 in Palazzo Vecchio, nel Salone dei Cinquecento, alla presenza di Dario Nardella, Sindaco di Firenze, Cristina Giachi, Vice Sindaca di Firenze e Assessora all’Educazione, Università e Ricerca, Abigail Rupp, Console Generale USA a Firenze, Portia Prebys, Presidente AACUPI, Julia Race, Direttrice del British Institute di Firenze, Andrea Davis, Co-Presidente della Tuscan American Association, si inaugura la prima edizione del “Tuscan AngloAmerican Festival in Florence” che, nei propositi degli ideatori, intende valorizzare lo stretto rapporto fra le università americane, i centri di cultura anglofona e la Toscana, promuovendo il dialogo continuo fra istituzioni, studiosi, insegnanti e studenti provenienti da tutto il mondo. Ogni anno a Firenze sono circa 9.000 gli studenti che frequentano gli oltre 45 programmi di “study abroad” e questi studenti sono senza alcun dubbio i primi ambasciatori di Firenze, della Toscana e dell’Italia nel mondo. Il loro periodo di studio a Firenze si traduce in significative esperienze formative e di volontariato che lasceranno un ricordo indelebile nelle loro vite di adulti. Parimenti la loro permanenza nel nostro territorio costituisce preziosa risorsa sia economica che culturale, nel senso più ampio e nobile. L’obiettivo che si è proposto il “Tuscan AngloAmerican Festival in Florence” è illustrare i tanti aspetti positivi della presenza degli studenti americani a Firenze attraverso la condivisione con i cittadini toscani di alcune delle attività che i nostri atenei promuovono quotidianamente e l’invito a prendervi parte. Il Festival sarà l’occasione per valorizzare lo speciale rapporto, umano e culturale, che da oltre un secolo unisce gli Stati Uniti e la Gran Bretagna con Firenze e la Toscana. Ciascuno degli “study abroad programs” a Firenze è come un’isola felice che agisce singolarmente e con linee guida indipendenti, questa è la prima volta che strutturiamo un grande progetto tutti insieme e l’auspicio è che ciò si traduca in un’esperienza importante e da ripetere per ciascuno dei partecipanti.

Dal maggio 2014 abbiamo lavorato all’ideazione di un “Tuscan AngloAmerican Festival” che intende avere una cadenza biennale e che attraverso convegni, mostre d’arte, concerti e seminari racconti le attività che caratterizzano i vari “study abroad programs” a Firenze ed in Toscana. Vogliamo trasmettere quello che siamo, la nostra missione, cosa facciamo insieme ai nostri studenti; sarà una festa con la comunità ed un’importante occasione di arricchimento reciproco e di coesione tra gli stessi programmi.
Le università americane e il British Institute aprono le loro porte alla cittadinanza al fine di accrescere l’interazione tra gli studenti americani ed i coetanei italiani.

Un aspetto fondamentale dell’esperienza degli studenti nordamericani che trascorrono un periodo di studio nella nostra regione sono le innumerevoli forme di volontariato al servizio della comunità cui prendono parte: lezioni di inglese per bambini, attività di traduzione, ripulitura dei palazzi del centro storico dai vandalismi murali insieme agli Angeli del Bello, solidarietà e attività di primo soccorso presso l’Arciconfraternita della Misericordia, sostegno all’ospedale Meyer.
La nostra speranza è che questo Festival sia anche l’occasione per estirpare molti luoghi comuni e fuorvianti stereotipi che troppo spesso sono associati alla presenza di studenti nord americani nella nostra città.
