This year Easter and the Florentine New Year almost overlap Between history, folklore and culture, Florence offers a great show
“Happy New Year!” is said twice in Florence. Obviously on the 1st of January, but also on March 25th. On this latter date we celebrate the “Florentine New Year”. Why? And what is this historical reoccurrence reintroduced among the official celebration of the city since the year of 2000? In order to find out we must go back in time, in the pre-Christian era. The ancient Roman calendar set the beginning of the year according to the spring equinox, that took place precisely on March 25th.
