In the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 24th a massive earthquake struck central Italy, whole villages in the provinces of Rieti, Ascoli Piceno, and Perugia fell to the ground. Among the victims so many children, many of whom had gone on holiday to stay with their grandparents, still linked to the towns where they were born in, grew up at and aged in. This tragedy shocked and moved Italy and the whole world; there are extraordinary manifestations of solace and solidarity everywhere.

The mobilization of volunteers from all over Italy offering their support to the families of Amatrice, Accumoli, Pescara del Tronto, Arquata del Tronto and surrounding municipalities, was immediate. The feeling of fear, confusion, injustice and anger, in addition to the sadness, was overtaken by people’s need to make themselves useful and to lend a hand to the survivors. The Protezione Civile Toscana was promptly activated and its members restlessly dug through the rubble, rescued the wounded, mounted tents, provided bed covers and distributed food and water to the people who had lost everything and who could not return to their homes that were uninhabitable or nonexistent. Florence and the Florentines showed their most authentic, generous heart, by meeting at the rugby Stadio Padovani to donate basic necessity items like water, food, blankets, toys and clothes. The Tuscan Region also allocated one million euros and set up a checking account for the territories in central Italy affected by the earthquake: the account number is n.8888.32 at the agency 17 di Mps in Florence, the IBAN number is IT 43 Q 01030 02818 000000888832.

The Misericordia di Firenze under the coordination of the Confederazione Nazionale delle Misericordie d’Italia sent two dog units with molecular dogs to search for the missing people under the rubble and they also opened a fund with a special bank account under the IBAN IT83C0867302804035000351546 payable to the Venerabile Arciconfraternita della Misericordia di Firenze – Piazza Duomo, 19 – 50122 Firenze. The reason for the deposit must be clearly marked as follows: “Offerte pro terremotati Centro Italia”.

Arriving from Florence, despite the difficult access to the disaster sites, volunteers from the Croce Rossa Italiana started helping in the first hours after the earthquake, they also set up a checking account with the following IBAN: IT38R0760103000000000900050, made out to the Associazione Italiana della Croce Rossa; anyone who wishes to donate should state the reason for the deposit as: “Poste Italiane con Croce Rossa Italiana – Terremoto Centro Italia”.

Even sports has made its contribution. The football team Fiorentina, as a gesture of respect for the families affected by the earthquake, canceled the party that was scheduled for Sunday, August 28th, to celebrate the club’s 90th anniversary, and redirected the money gathered for the party to the populations of Lazio, Marche and Umbria.

The Amatriciana pasta, an authentic symbol of the Italian cuisine in the world, named after Amatrice and based on its traditions, is at the heart of yet another initiative “A future for Amatrice”, that came about spontaneously on the web and was re-launched by Slow Food; in very few hours it received the support of restaurateurs from Italy and abroad. For those who wish to participate, simply add the Amatriciana pasta dish to the menu of your own restaurant and donate two euros for each dish of pasta amatriciana sold. The donation may be sent directly to the bank account of the Municipality of Amatrice and the money will help the reconstruction of the town destroyed by the earthquake (IBAN: IT 28 M 08327 73470 000000006000). Nelle prime ore del mattino di mercoledì 24 agosto un violento sisma ha colpito l’Italia centrale, interi paesi nelle province di Rieti, Ascoli Piceno e Perugia sono stati resi al suolo. Tra le vittime tanti bambini, molti dei quali erano andati in vacanza dai nonni, rimasti legati al paese dove erano nati, cresciuti ed invecchiati. La tragedia ha sconvolto e commosso l’Italia ed il mondo intero, ovunque ci sono state straordinarie manifestazioni di conforto e solidarietà. Immediata la mobilitazione di volontari da tutta Italia per offrire il proprio supporto alle famiglie di Amatrice, Accumoli, Pescara del Tronto, Arquata del Tronto e dei comuni limitrofi. La sensazione di paura, sconcerto, ingiustizia e rabbia, insieme alla tristezza, è stata superata dalla necessità di rendersi utili, di dare una mano ai sopravvissuti. Subito si è attivata la Protezione Civile Toscana i cui membri senza darsi tregua, per giorni, hanno scavato tra le macerie, soccorso i feriti, montato le tende, fornito un posto letto al coperto e distribuito acqua e cibo a persone che hanno perso tutto e che non possono tornare nelle loro abitazioni, perché inagibili o perché il rifugio di una vita non esiste più. Firenze e i fiorentini hanno mostrato il proprio volto più autentico, il cuore generoso, dandosi appuntamento allo Stadio Padovani di Rugby per donare generi di prima necessità, acqua, cibo, coperte, giocattoli, abiti. La Misericordia di Firenze, con il coordinamento della Confederazione Nazionale delle Misericordie d’Italia, ha inviato due Unità Cinofile con cani molecolari per ricercare i dispersi sotto le macerie ed ha aperto una sottoscrizione di fondi con un apposito conto corrente il cui IBAN è IT83C0867302804035000351546 intestato a Venerabile Arciconfraternita della Misericordia di Firenze – Piazza Duomo, 19 – 50122 Firenze. Nella causale deve essere riportata la seguente dicitura “Offerte pro terremotati Centro Italia”.

Da Firenze, nonostante la difficoltà di accesso ai luoghi del disastro, sono partiti già nelle prime ore dopo il sisma anche i volontari della Croce Rossa Italiana, la quale ha attivato un conto corrente con le seguenti coordinate IBAN: IT38R0760103000000000900050, intestato a Associazione Italiana della Croce Rossa, causale: “Poste Italiane con Croce Rossa Italiana – Terremoto Centro Italia”.

Anche lo sport si è mobilitato. La squadra di calcio della Fiorentina, come gesto di rispetto verso le famiglie colpite dal terremoto, ha annullato la festa che era prevista domenica 28 agosto per i 90 anni del club ed ha destinato l’incasso dell’incontro alle popolazioni di Lazio, Marche e Umbria.

La pasta all’amatriciana, autentico simbolo della cucina italiana in tutto il mondo ed il cui nome e tradizione derivano proprio da Amatrice, è al centro dell’iniziativa Un futuro per Amatrice, nata spontaneamente sul web e rilanciata da Slow Food, che in pochissime ore ha ricevuto l’adesione di ristoratori dall’Italia e dall’estero. Per chi volesse aderire a quest’ultima iniziativa è molto semplice, basta inserire la pasta all’amatriciana nel menù del proprio ristorante e versare due euro per ogni piatto di pasta all’amatriciana consumato, direttamente sul conto corrente del Comune di Amatrice, per contribuire alla ricostruzione del comune reatino distrutto dal sisma (IBAN: IT 28 M 08327 73470 000000006000). Ogni gesto è importante per aiutare chi ha perso tutto.
