During Election Day, on this November 8th, the Americans will be called to the polls to elect the President of the United States. The presidential candidate who receives at least 270 votes will be the victor, that is to say the absolute majority. The new president will take office from January 20th, 2017. Given the understandable interest in this long awaited election, the Associazione Toscana-Usa (TAA) and the Associazione Filippo Mazzei have organised in Florence the Election night, on November 8th, 2016, a big party to follow the progress of the US elections thanks to an overseas television link. The authorities present will be as follows: Abigail Rupp, US Consul General, a video of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi will be shown, Riccardo Nencini, Vice-Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Nicoletta Mantovani, councillor for the International Relations of the City of Florence, representatives of the Tuscan region and American students who want to accompany the elections will also be present. The appointment with the long election night will be hosted at the restaurant Fosso Bandito (corner with Viale Fratelli Rosselli and Via del Fosso Macinante, in Florence, near the Opera House), where after dinner, guests will be able to follow the American elections until late at night. Both associations are committed to strengthening relations between Tuscany and the US. In fact, the Filippo Mazzei Association is working on the rediscovery and value of the extraordinary story of Filippo Mazzei, a great Tuscan, friend of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, among those who gave life to the debate that led to the drafting of the Declaration of Independence of America, in fact the famous phrase “All men are by nature free and independent” is commonly attributed to him. The Associazione Toscana-Usa (Tuscan American Association, TAA) was formed in 1995 by a group of people who felt the need to create an entity with the aim of promoting cultural and scientific exchange between Tuscany and the United States, especially through initiatives to be carried out in our region or in the US. The dual nature of the association is quite clear as there two presidents, one of Italian nationality and the other one being American. Since 2000, it has become a non-profit organisation. The condition that determined its foundation was, certainly, the common fact between the two realities, Tuscany and the United States, which have developed over time a compelling relationship from a cultural and social point of view, for example regarding education (you only have to think about the great number of American students present in study the abroad programs in our area), cinema, fashion, economy, tourism, literature, and the knowledge that such a relationship was able to develop and consolidate more and more thanks to the activity of the TAA. And there many initiatives, from the organisation of the traditional holiday to celebrate July 4th, 1776, or rather the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America; participation in the celebrations of Memorial Day, in which the last Monday of every May, the American cemetery of Falciani remembers the fallen American soldiers who freed Tuscany from the Nazis during World War II; the organisation of the Welcome day in Palazzo Vecchio, where the city welcomes American students who come to Tuscany to study in local branches of American universities; the Festa degli auguri at the end of the year that takes place at the American Consulate in Florence. The TAA association is also very attentive to female entrepreneurs and has formed a committee called Professional women’s committee through which entrepreneurs and professionals, Italians and Americans, can meet and discuss issues of interest relevant to them. The Co-Presidents of the Toscana-USA Association (TAA), Andrea Davis and Federico Frediani, explain that “the mutual cultural values between the US and Tuscany are bountiful, as was also highlighted in the recent visit of Prime Minister Renzi in Washington, and the Tuscany-USA association is an entity that aims to help maintain this community of values and does so through activities that it promotes, in close cooperation with the American Consulate in Florence and local institutions”.

In occasione dell’Election day, il prossimo 8 novembre, gli americani saranno chiamati alle urne per scegliere i ‘grandi elettori’ che voteranno per eleggere il Presidente degli Stati Uniti d’America. Vincerà il candidato presidenziale che avrà ottenuto almeno 270 voti, cioè la maggioranza assoluta. Il nuovo Presidente entrerà in carica dal 20 gennaio 2017. Visto il comprensibile interesse verso quest’attesa elezione, l’Associazione Toscana-Usa (TAA) e l’Associazione Filippo Mazzei hanno organizzato a Firenze l’Election night, l’8 novembre 2016, una grande festa per seguire l’andamento delle elezioni americane grazie a collegamenti televisivi oltreoceano. Presenti le autorità: Abigail Rupp, Console Generale USA, sarà proiettato un video del premier Matteo Renzi, ci saranno Riccardo Nencini, Viceministro delle Infrastrutture e dei Trasporti, Nicoletta Mantovani, Assessore alle Relazioni internazionali per il Comune di Firenze, rappresentanti della Regione Toscana e gli studenti americani che vorranno seguire le elezioni. L’appuntamento con la lunga notte elettorale è presso il ristorante Fosso Bandito (Angolo Viale F.lli Rosselli e Via del Fosso Macinante, a Firenze, vicino al Teatro dell’Opera), dove dopo la cena, gli ospiti potranno seguire i programmi elettorali americani fino a tarda notte. Entrambe le associazioni sono impegnate nel rafforzamento dei rapporti tra la Toscana e gli USA. Infatti l’Associazione Filippo Mazzei è impegnata nella riscoperta e valorizzazione della straordinaria storia di Filippo Mazzei, un grande toscano, amico di Thomas Jefferson e George Washington, tra coloro che animarono il dibattito che portò alla stesura della Dichiarazione d’Indipendenza Americana, proprio a lui viene infatti comunemente attribuita la celebre frase “Tutti gli uomini sono per natura liberi ed indipendenti”. L’Associazione Toscana-Usa (The Tuscan American Association, TAA) fu costituita nel 1995 da un gruppo di persone che sentirono la necessità di creare un’entità che avesse lo scopo di promuovere gli scambi culturali e scientifici tra la Toscana e gli Stati Uniti, soprattutto attraverso iniziative da svolgere nella nostra regione o negli Stati Uniti. La duplice natura dell’associazione è chiara anche per il fatto che i presidenti sono due, uno di nazionalità italiana e l’altro di nazionalità americana. Dal 2000 è divenuta onlus. Certamente il presupposto che ne determinò la fondazione fu la constatazione che tra le due realtà, la Toscana e gli Stati Uniti, si sono sviluppati nel tempo rapporti significativi da un punto di vista culturale e sociale, per esempio per quanto attiene l’educazione (basti pensare all’importante presenza degli studenti americani impegnati in programmi di study abroad nel nostro territorio), il cinema, la moda, l’economia, il turismo, la letteratura, e la consapevolezza che tali rapporti avrebbero potuto svilupparsi e consolidarsi sempre di più proprio grazie all’attività svolta dalla TAA. E le iniziative sono tante, dall’organizzazione della tradizionale festa per celebrare il 4 luglio 1776, ovvero la Dichiarazione di Indipendenza degli Stati Uniti d’America; la partecipazione alle celebrazioni del Memorial day, quando ogni anno, nell’ultimo lunedì di maggio, presso il cimitero americano dei Falciani si ricordano i soldati americani caduti per liberare la Toscana dall’occupazione nazista durante la seconda guerra mondiale; l’organizzazione del Welcome day in Palazzo Vecchio con cui la città dà il benvenuto agli studenti americani che arrivano in Toscana per studiare nelle sedi locali delle università americane; la Festa degli auguri di fine anno realizzata presso il Consolato Americano di Firenze. L’associazione TAA è molto attenta anche all’imprenditoria femminile ed ha costituito un comitato denominato the Professional women’s committee grazie al quale imprenditrici e professioniste, italiane e americane, possono incontrarsi e discutere temi di loro interesse. I Co-Presidenti dell’Associazione Toscana-Usa (TAA), Andrea Davis e Federico Frediani, ci spiegano che “i valori culturali condivisi tra gli Usa e la Toscana sono molti, come è stato evidenziato anche nella recente visita del premier Renzi a Washington, e l’associazione Toscana-Usa è un’entità che intende contribuire a mantenere viva questa comunanza di valori e lo fa attraverso le attività che promuove, in stretta collaborazione con il Consolato Americano di Firenze e con le istituzioni locali”.
