Not everyone can be a champion at sixteen years old. Caterina Banchelli, goalkeeper of the water polo women’s team of Rari Nantes Florentia, has already won the bronze medal last December with the national team, Under 18 category, at the World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand. Born in 2000, she begins to play eight years later, following the passion of brother Lorenzo with the cap of “Florentia”, the oldest and most titled sports club in Tuscany. Six Olympic medals for water polo and nine national championships, seven Italian titles for diving, eighty-eight titles for swimming and numerous international trophies: this is the glorious past of the sports club, born in 1905, that has also received the golden collar for sporting merit.

After a short period playing as attacker, Caterina Banchelli agreed with her coach Maurizio Ceccarelli, moved in defense as a goalkeeper and since then she has enjoyed a continuous growth thanks to an extraordinary sporting attitude and an unusual matureness for such a young athlete. “I always enjoyed this role – Caterina recounts – it is unique but also requires great responsibility, because in the end I am the last defender for my team”. Especially when there are penalties to block. “It’s a moment filled with tension – she continues – My tactic? I prefer to wait for the moves of my opponent and then throw myself in the right direction. There are moments that seem very long and it takes calm and concentration”.
Her curriculum is highly respectable giving her young age. It’s been four years since she has been defending the gate of her team with which she has earned a promotion to the A1 series in 2014 and two playoff finals in the A2 series. Still in 2014, she led the Under 15 team to the winning of the championship for the category, also earning the title of best goalkeeper of the finals.

An achievement that has opened the doors for her to enter the youth nationals. She wore the blue cap at the European Games in Baku, in 2015, where the blue team Under 18 finished fourth just like in the European Games Under 19 last summer in Holland. Until she won the bronze last December. Recently the A2 series championship began and Caterina divides her days between school, she is in the third year at the linguistic high school, and workouts. “I make a lot of sacrifices which are compensated by passion and the fact that I have fun playing side by side with my friends – and concludes – Our objective is the promotion to the top series and we will do everything to meet that goal”.

Non è da tutti essere un campione a sedici anni. Caterina Banchelli, portiere della squadra femminile di pallanuoto della Rari Nantes Florentia, lo scorso dicembre ha già vinto la medaglia di bronzo con la nazionale Under 18 ai campionati Mondiali di categoria ad Auckland in Nuova Zelanda. Nata nel 2000, otto anni dopo inizia a giocare seguendo la passione del fratello Lorenzo con la calottina della “Florentia”, la società sportiva più antica e più titolata della Toscana. Sei medaglie olimpiche di pallanuoto e nove campionati nazionali, sette titoli italiani nei tuffi, ottantotto titoli nel nuoto e numerosi trofei internazionali: questo il glorioso passato della società, nata nel 1905, che ha ricevuto anche il collare d’oro al merito sportivo.

 

Caterina Banchelli, dopo un breve periodo all’attacco, d’accordo con il suo allenatore Maurizio Ceccarelli, è passata in porta e da allora è stato un continuo crescendo grazie ad un’attitudine sportiva straordinaria e ad una maturità inusuale per un’atleta così giovane. “Mi è sempre piaciuto questo ruolo – racconta Caterina – è unico ma comporta anche una grande responsabilità perché alla fine sono l’ultimo difensore della mia squadra”. Soprattutto quando ci sono da parare i rigori. “È un momento di grande tensione – continua – La mia tattica? Io preferisco aspettare le mosse dell’avversaria per poi buttarmi dalla parte giusta. Sono attimi che sembrano lunghissimi e ci vuole calma e concentrazione”. Il suo curriculum è di tutto rispetto visto la giovane età. Da quattro anni difende la porta della sua squadra con la quale ha ottenuto una promozione in serie A1 nel 2014 e due finali play off in serie A2. Sempre nel 2014 ha condotto la squadra Under 15 alla conquista dello scudetto di categoria conquistando anche il titolo di miglior portiere della finale.

Un risultato che le ha aperto le porte delle nazionale giovanile. Ha indossato la calottina azzurra ai Giochi Europei di Baku nel 2015 dove la squadra azzurra Under 18 è arrivata quarta così come agli Europei Under 19 la scorsa estate in Olanda. Fino ad arrivare al bronzo del dicembre scorso. Da poco è cominciato il campionato di serie A2 e Caterina divide le sue giornate fra la scuola, frequenta la terza al liceo linguistico, e gli allenamenti. “Faccio tanti sacrifici compensati dalla passione e dal fatto che insieme alle mie compagne ci divertiamo a giocare insieme – e conclude – Il nostro obiettivo è la promozione nella massima serie e faremo di tutto per raggiungerlo”.
