Born and raised in London, of Armenian-Cypriot origin, Baret Magarian is an emerging novelist who found his home and inspiration in Florence, Italy. After writing features for some of London’s most prestigious publications such as The Times, The Guardian, and The Independent, Magarian is welcoming his first published novel The Fabrications on June 1st, from the New York based Pleasure Boat Studio. The Fabrications is a captivating read, focused on a strange concept: what if a writer’s fictional story about your life becomes reality? The main protagonists, Daniel Bloch, popular novelist, and Oscar Babel, a cinema projectionist, bewitch the readers, transporting them into a distorted world where anything can be possible and all can be achieved or endured. As Bloch begins to change the fate of Oscar through his writing, much to the latter’s astonishment, his own life falls into darkness, despair and madness. When the devilish publicist, Ryan Rees, enters the picture, Oscar Babel becomes nothing other than a 21st century messiah, maneuvered like a puppet for Rees’ pleasure. Other stories also emerge around the main theme of the novel: the intrigue around the charming painter Najette, Bloch’s reunion with his father, who was seduced by his ex-wife Natalie, and unexpected PR stunts delivered by Rees.
“I think my novel is unusual, because it attempts to fuse a topical narrative – about the power of the media, and the nature of fame today – with an investigation into free will, identity, and sex” Magarian explains. The Fabrications is an original novel with an elegant touch of black humor and irony, guiding the readers into a soul-searching state, leaving them to wonder about the reality of the digital world we live in today and the alluring lie revolving around fame and celebrity.
“What the novel does, I think, is to place its satirical core within an altogether more mysterious context and the juxtaposition accounts, in the end, for the book’s interest” Magarian concludes.
The novel is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Todo Modo, and will be stocked at the Paperback Exchange bookshop in Florence, where Magarian’s novella Mirror and Silhouette is also currently to be found.
