Welcome Day in Florence The traditional welcoming ceremony for American students is renewed annually at Palazzo Vecchio

In Northern American culture, the opportunity to attend a foreign study program represents a significant moment in defining one’s identity and is also an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the countries of origin of their ethnic groups and the nations with which the United States maintain economic and cultural exchange relations. Tuscany and Florence represents a historically popular destination for American students, because of the Art, the Culture, the History and the Enogastronomy; their presence in the study abroad programs, belonging to American universities based on Florentine and Tuscan ground, is important not only for cultural and educational aspects but also for the primary effects that are created in the local economy. Aware of this close connection and of its historical background, for more than twenty years the Tuscan American Association ONLUS (TAA), which has the main purpose of promoting cultural exchanges between Tuscany and the US, organizes each year a welcoming ceremony addressed to the American students who begin their studies at American universities based in Tuscany.

This year the Welcome Day was held on the 25th of October in the most symbolic and glorious place in Florence, the Salone de’ Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio. Welcoming the students to the city were Cristina Giachi, Vice Mayor and Councilor for Education, University and Research, Benjamin V. Wohlauer, Consul General of the Consulate General of the United States of America in Florence, and the two Co-Presidents of the TAA Association, Andrea Davis and Federico Frediani. Traditionally, during the Welcome Day the Tuscany-USA Award is also awarded, an acknowledgment addressed to two personalities (a Tuscan and an American), chosen together with the American Consul in Florence, who have distinguished themselves through their work and who have contributed in a meaningful way to strengthen the ties of friendship and relationship between Tuscany and the United States, so that their path and goals can be a specific example of conduct for students.

This year the awardees were, Dr. Luigi Lazzareschi, CEO of the Sofidel Group, the sixth biggest household and hygiene tissue manufacturer in the world, for his contribution to create jobs in the US through the group companies, and Prof. Nancy Thomson de Grummond, an expert in Etruscan, Hellenistic and Roman archeology, and Professor of Classical Studies at Florida State University, for conducting the archaeological excavations in Cetamura del Chianti, Tuscany, whose research activity contributed to gain a deeper knowledge about the Etruscans.

La tradizionale cerimonia di benvenuto per gli studenti americani si rinnova di anno in anno in Palazzo Vecchio

Nella cultura nordamericana l’opportunità di frequentare un programma di studio all’estero rappresenta un momento importante per la definizione della propria identità e diviene anche occasione per rafforzare il rapporto con i paesi d’origine dei propri gruppi etnici e con le nazioni con cui gli Stati Uniti intrattengono rapporti di scambio economico e culturale. La Toscana e Firenze rappresentano storicamente una destinazione molto amata dagli studenti americani, per l’Arte, la Cultura, la Storia e l’Enogastronomia; la loro presenza nei programmi di study abroad delle università americane con sede nel territorio fiorentino e toscano è importante non solo per gli aspetti culturali e educativi ma anche per gli effetti, tutt’altro che secondari, che produce nell’economia locale. Consapevole di questa stretta connessione e dei suoi storici presupposti, da più di venti anni l’Associazione Toscana Usa Onlus (TAA), che ha tra i suoi scopi principali quello di favorire gli scambi culturali tra la Toscana e gli USA, organizza ogni anno la cerimonia di benvenuto rivolta agli studenti americani che iniziano il loro percorso di studio nelle università americane con sede in Toscana.

Quest’anno il Welcome Day si è tenuto il 25 ottobre scorso nel luogo più rappresentativo e glorioso di Firenze, il Salone de’ Cinquecento a Palazzo Vecchio. Hanno portato il saluto della città Cristina Giachi, Vice Sindaco e Assessore all’Educazione, Università e Ricerca, Benjamin V. Wohlauer, Console Generale del Consolato Generale degli Stati Uniti d’America a Firenze e i due Co-Presidenti dell’Associazione TAA, Andrea Davis e Federico Frediani. Per tradizione, durante il Welcome Day viene assegnato anche il Premio Toscana-USA, un riconoscimento rivolto a due personalità (un toscano ed un americano), scelte insieme al Console Americano a Firenze, che si sono distinte nel proprio lavoro e che hanno contributo in modo significativo a rafforzare i legami di amicizia e le relazioni fra la Toscana e gli Stati Uniti, affinché il loro percorso e gli obiettivi conseguiti possano essere un esempio concreto di condotta per gli studenti.

Quest’anno sono stati premiati il Dott. Luigi Lazzareschi, Amministratore Delegato di Sofidel SpA, il sesto produttore al mondo di carta, per il suo contributo a creare posti di lavoro negli USA tramite le società del gruppo, e la Prof. Nancy Thomson de Grummond, esperta di archeologia Etrusca, Ellenistica e Romana e Professore di Studi Classici presso la Florida State University, per la direzione degli scavi archeologici a Cetamura del Chianti, in Toscana, la cui attività di ricerca ha contribuito alla conoscenza degli Etruschi.
