The United States of America has had a diplomatic presence in Florence since 1819. In that year, the U.S. Consul in Livorno appointed a consular agent, an Italian named James Ombrosi, to represent U.S. interests in the capital of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

Since then many U.S. consulates have opened and closed around Italy, but our presence in Florence has remained and has grown from a consular agency to a consulate to a consulate general. This reflects the strong and enduring ties that exist, in general, between Italy and the United States and, in particular, between my country and Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna and the Republic of San Marino. Today more than 60,000 Americans live in the consular district. They are entrepreneurs, investors, teachers, artists, professors, etc. They are your neighbors, colleagues, friends, customers and perhaps employers.

According to the American Chamber of Commerce in Italy, almost 11,000 Tuscans (and many more in Emilia Romagna) work for American investors. There are 1,200 Americans and Italians who work side by side to ensure our national security at the Camp Darby military community in Pisa-Livorno. There are about a million tourists who visit us, and 8,000 students who come here to study each year. And let us not forget the 4,400 Americans who are laid to rest in Impruneta/San Casciano Val di Pesa, who died during the Second World War and were buried in the Florence American Cemetery. I advise everyone to pay a visit there. It is one of the most peaceful, wonderful, and touching places in our area. Thus, relations between Italy and the United States are already close, but there is always room to expand and enrich them.

As my term gets underway, I am prioritizing three things. To protect American citizens. This has always been our top priority. We already have a very close collaboration with Florence and various municipalities, as well as with the regions of Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, to keep Americans safe. I would like to explore new ideas on how to integrate Americans better so that they become more active members of their communities. Americans have a strong community spirit and tradition of voluntary service. We should find a way to more effectively tap into them and highlight the good things that Americans do here. To grow Italian investment in the United States. In the consular district there are important American investors such as BHGE, Eli Lilly, Philip Morris, and others. I know great Italian companies such as Sofidel, Kedrion, Pelliconi, and Powersoft that have made significant investments in the United States.

I would like to work together with Italian partners to encourage more Italian companies to look for investment opportunities in the United States.To celebrate together the 200th anniversary of our diplomatic presence in 2019. This is an opportunity to reflect on our shared history and values over the last 200 years and think about how we can do even more together in the future. We hope to make this a community effort, as many people have stories to tell or documents to share that represent a glimpse of this period of shared experience.As the 44th U.S. diplomatic representative in Florence, I feel a great responsibility to continue the work my predecessors began. There are many things that we’ve accomplished and that we can continue to do. But perhaps more important than the Consulate’s role is that of individual American citizens and companies that love this part of Italy and San Marino and want to build even more lasting and fruitful foundations for bilateral cooperation.

a Firenze

Gli Stati Uniti d’America hanno avuto una presenza diplomatica a Firenze a partire dal 1819. In quell’anno, il Console di Livorno nominò un agente consolare, un italiano di nome James Ombrosi, per rappresentare gli interessi statunitensi nella capitale del Granducato di Toscana.

Da allora diversi consolati americani sono stati aperti e chiusi in giro per l’Italia, ma la nostra presenza a Firenze è rimasta immutata ed è cresciuta da un’agenzia consolare ad un consolato fino a diventare un consolato generale. Questo dimostra il forte e durevole legame che esiste in generale tra l’Italia e gli Stati Uniti e, in particolare, tra il mio paese e la Toscana, l’Emilia-Romagna e la Repubblica di San Marino. Oggi più di 60.000 americani abitano nel distretto consolare. Si tratta di imprenditori, investitori, insegnanti, artisti, professori, ecc. Sono i vostri vicini di casa, colleghi, amici, clienti e, forse, datori di lavoro. Secondo l’American Chamber of Commerce in Italia, quasi 11.000 Toscani (e molto di più in Emilia Romagna) lavorano per gli investitori americani. Ci sono 1.200 americani e italiani che stanno lavorando fianco a fianco nella base di Camp Darby a Pisa-Livorno per assicurare la nostra sicurezza nazionale. Ci sono circa un milione di turisti che ci visitano e 8.000 studenti che vengono ogni anno a studiare. E non possiamo dimenticare che ci sono 4.400 americani che riposeranno per sempre a Impruneta/San Casciano Val di Pesa, morti durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale e sepoliti nel Cimitero Militare Americano. Io consiglio a ognuno di fare una visita al Cimitero Militare Americano, che rappresenta uno dei più tranquilli, meravigliosi e toccanti luoghi del nostro territorio. Dunque i rapporti tra l’Italia e gli Stati Uniti sono già stretti, pero c’è sempre spazio per espanderli e approfondirli. All’inizio del mio mandato ho tre priorità.

La sicurezza degli americani, questa è da sempre la nostra prima priorità. Abbiamo già una collaborazione molto intensa con Firenze e i vari comuni e con le regioni della Toscana e dell’Emilia-Romagna in quest’ambito. Vorrei esplorare nuove idee per integrare meglio gli americani in modo che diventino membri più attivi delle loro comunità. Gli americani hanno un grande spirito di comunità e la tradizione del volontariato. Dovremmo trovare un modo per attingere realmente da questi valori ed evidenziare le buone cose che gli americani fanno qui. Far crescere l’investimento italiano negli Stati Uniti. Nel distretto consolare vi sono investitori americani molto importanti come BHGE, Eli Lilly, Philip Morris, ed altri. Conosco le grandi imprese italiane come Sofidel, Kedrion e Powersoft che hanno fatto investimenti di rilievo anche negli Stati Uniti.

Vorrei lavorare insieme con i partner italiani per plasmare nuove partnership per le imprese italiane interessate ad investire negli Stati Uniti.Celebrare insieme il 200° anniversario della nostra presenza diplomatica nel 2019. Questa è un’opportunità per riflettere sui nostri valori e storie condivise negli ultimi 200 anni e pensare a come possiamo fare ancora di più insieme, in futuro. Speriamo di rendere questo uno sforzo della comunità, in quanto ci sono molte persone che hanno storie da raccontare o documenti da condividere che rappresentano uno scorcio di questo periodo di esperienza condivisa. Come 44° rappresentante diplomatico statunitense a Firenze, sento una grande responsabilità nel proseguire il lavoro che i miei predecessori hanno iniziato. Ci sono molte cose che abbiamo fatto e che possiamo continuare a fare. Ma, forse, più importante del nostro ruolo è quello dei singoli cittadini americani e delle aziende che vogliono bene a questa parte d’Italia e a San Marino e vogliono costruire delle fondamenta ancora più durature e fruttuose per la cooperazione bilaterale.
