“Uno dei valori più importanti che condividiamo è la libertà di parola e di stampa, come fondamento del governo democratico. I governi democratici non sono infallibili, ma sono tenuti a rispondere ai cittadini che li hanno eletti. Lo scambio di idee attraverso i media è il fondamento di questa responsabilità”, lo ha affermato Benjamin V. Wolhauer, Console generale degli Stati Uniti a Firenze, aprendo la cerimonia di assegnazione del Premio giornalistico Amerigo tenutasi il 14 dicembre scorso a Firenze.

Il Premio, giunto alla nona edizione, rappresenta un riconoscimento morale per i professionisti della comunicazione che contribuiscono con il loro lavoro ad una migliore comprensione della realtà americana nel nostro Paese.

Organizzato dal Chapter fiorentino dell’Associazione Amerigo, che riunisce i partecipanti italiani ai programmi di scambio internazionale del Dipartimento di Stato, prevede 10 sezioni ed un Premio Speciale, attribuito quest’anno a Mario Sechi, già direttore di quotidiani e periodici ed oggi titolare della newsletter politica List. Gli altri riconoscimenti sono andati a Riccardo Luna dell’AGI (agenzie), Francesco Semprini (La Stampa, quotidiani), Dario Fabbri (Limes, periodici), Sylvia Poggiali ( radio), Luca Rigoni ( News Mediaset – TV), Valerio Nicolosi (fotografia), Paolo Messa (Formiche, siti web), Davide Mancini ( Media Vox Pop, Twitter) e James Fontanella Khan (Financial Times, Premio under 35). ll Premio Amerigo ENAM (European Network of American Alumni Associations) è stato attribuito, invece, a Hesna Al Gahoui, inviata e corrispondente esteri ungherese.

Amerigo rewards Italian journalists who recount
America. Mario Sechi is the winner of the Special Prize 2017

“One of the most important values we share is freedom of speech and of press, as the foundation of a democratic government. Democratic governments are not infallible, but they must answer to the citizens who elected them. The exchange of ideas through the media is the foundation of this responsibility”, said Benjamin V. Wolhauer, Consul General of the United States in Florence, opening the ceremony for the awarding of the Journalist Prize organized by Amerigo Association and held on last December 14 , in Florence.

The Award, now in its ninth edition, represents a moral acknowledgment for those journalists who contribute with their work to a better understanding of the American reality in our country.

Organized by the Florentine Chapter of Amerigo Association, which brings together Italian participants in the State Department’s international exchange programs, t he a ward includes 10 sections and a Special Prize, this year awarded t o Mario Sechi, former editor-in-chief of newspapers and periodicals and now director of the political newsletter List.
