Non è facile sintetizzare in poche parole quello che ha rappresentato, e ancora oggi significa, l’emergenza COVID-19 per la Croce Rossa Italiana – Comitato di Firenze.

I numeri possono aiutarci a capire lo sforzo organizzativo e operativo di tutta l’Associazione durante questi mesi che hanno stravolto il nostro paese. Sono state oltre 5.000 le persone assistite con i servizi di pronto spesa e pronto farmaco durante il lockdown, inoltre circa 400 famiglie sono state assistite (e lo sono tuttora) con pacchi di generi alimentari. Due mesi di operatività per l’ambulanza speciale dedicata ai casi COVID, che si è andata ad aggiungere ai consueti servizi per il 118 e i trasporti ordinari che non si sono mai fermati, neanche nelle fasi più acute dell’emergenza, arrivando ad avere fino a 5 ambulanze impegnate contemporaneamente. Sono orgoglioso di ricordare anche ciò che abbiamo svolto fuori dalla nostra consueta area di pertinenza, inviando a Bergamo un’ambulanza e due equipaggi che, alternandosi, hanno garantito per una settimana h24 servizi aggiuntivi in una delle aree più colpite del nostro paese. Tutto questo è stato possibile grazie alla grandissima risposta dei nostri volontari. Fin dai primi giorni abbiamo aperto le porte ai cosiddetti “volontari temporanei”, persone comuni che hanno risposto al nostro appello e che sono stati con noi in prima linea durante l’emergenza. La grande solidarietà di Firenze e dei fiorentini non si è fatta aspettare, e sono stati circa 600 i volontari temporanei. Le attività portate avanti dalla Croce Rossa Italiana – Comitato di Firenze sono state tantissime e molto diversificate: supporto alla Protezione Civile del Comune di Firenze, screening sanitari per gli ospiti dell’Albergo Popolare, servizio medico domiciliare per conto dell’Azienda Sanitaria, dog-sitting per persone covid positive, e tante altre attività che hanno visto impegnati i nostri volontari, lo staff, i medici e gli infermieri. La nostra azione è stata resa ancora più incisiva grazie al supporto di aziende, enti, associazioni e privati. La Fondazione Robert F. Kennedy Italia ha donato un’ambulanza ad alto-biocontenimento al nostro Comitato, mezzo di altissimo valore tecnologico messo subito al servizio della città di Firenze, importanti sono state anche le donazioni da parte della Tuscan American Association, del Rotary Club Firenze e dell’Associazione Agata Smeralda, grazie alle quali la Croce Rossa di Firenze ha potuto dotarsi nuovi automezzi per i servizi alla comunità. Il presidente nazionale della Croce Rossa, Francesco Rocca, ha definito “il tempo della gentilezza” l’intervento a favore della popolazione colpita dal covid-19, azione che ha messo al centro del nostro operato la comunità, in tutti i suoi aspetti, le nuove vulnerabilità e l’attenzione nei confronti degli altri. È questo il significato dell’essere donne e uomini di Croce Rossa, a maggior ragione durante un’emergenza che ha cambiato radicalmente il volto della nostra società.

Florence’s strong sense of solidarity
A thank you to our volunteers

It is not easy to sum up in a nutshell what the Covid-19 emergency represented – and still represents – for the Italian Red Cross – Committee of Florence. The numbers can help us to understand the organizational and operational effort of all of the Association during these months that turned the country upside down. We offered assistance to over 5,000 people during lockdown with our at-home grocery and pharmacy delivery services, and about 400 families were – and still are – assisted with food packages. For two months, our special ambulance dedicated to Covid cases was in service, and complemented the regular operations of the 118 and the usual transportation activities, which never ceased, not even during the most acute phases of the emergency, reaching up to 5 contemporarily active ambulances. I am also proud to remember what we did beyond our customary areas of pertinence, by sending an ambulance and two teams to Bergamo, who, for a week, in alternation, offered additional 24/7 services in one of the most, hard-hit areas of our country. All of this was made possible thanks to the great response by our volunteers. Since the first few days, we opened our doors to so-called “temporary volunteers,” ordinary people who responded to our call and have been with us on the frontline during the emergency. The great solidarity of Florence and of the Florentine people was not long in coming, with about 600 temporary volunteers. The activities carried out by the Italian Red Cross – Committee of Florence, have been many and quite diverse: from supporting the Civil Protection of the City of Florence to health screenings for the guests of the Folk Guesthouse, and even at-home health services to assist the Public Health System, dog-sitting for Covid-positive individuals, and many other actions that involved our volunteers, the staff, doctors and nurses. All of this was made even more incisive thanks to the support offered by companies, entities, associations and privates. The Robert F. Kennedy Foundation Italy donated a high-bio containment ambulance to our Committee, a vehicle with great technological value that was immediately made available to the city of Florence, and even other important donations by the Tuscan American Association, the Rotary Club Firenze, and the Agata Smeralda Association, thanks to which the Red Cross of Florence was able to purchase new vehicles to extend its services to the community. The national president of the Red Cross, Francesco Rocca, defined the intervention in support of the people affected by COVID-19 as a “time of kindness”, an action that focused our efforts on the community, in all of its aspects, with new vulnerabilities and an attention towards others. This is the meaning of being women and men of the Red Cross, even more so during an emergency that radically changed the face of our society.
