Il Festival del Maggio Musicale compie 90 anni e resta il punto centrale della programmazione del Teatro del Maggio la cui prestigiosa storia è strettamente legata al Festival. Insieme ai due “nuovi festival satelliti”, vale a dire quello d’Autunno e quello di Carnevale, il Maggio Musicale Fiorentino ben contribuisce a rendere Firenze la “Città dei Festival”. Due mesi e mezzo di programmazione con tre opere e otto concerti, con una “coda” in settembre e novembre a comporre poi un “ciclo Mehta-Mozart”. Tre le prime opere liriche, Don Giovanni, di Mozart, Otello, di Verdi, entrambe dirette da Zubin Mehta e l’attesissima Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg di Wagner diretta da Daniele Gatti, più, per comporre il ciclo mozartiano, le riprese di altre due opere dapontiane, Le nozze di Figaro in settembre e Così fan tutte in novembre, dirette entrambe da Zubin Mehta, cinque opere in totale. Otto i concerti sinfonici che prendono avvio il 22 aprile inaugurando il Festival con la direzione di Daniele Gatti e altri sette concerti, tra cui quello del 10 maggio dedicato al progetto “Viva Verdi” messo in cartellone per contribuire all’acquisto, da parte del Ministero della Cultura, di Villa Sant’Agata, la casa-museo di Giuseppe Verdi, e un fuori programma il 17 giugno, al Visarno Arena con l’Orchestra impegnata con gli Who. Inoltre un’opera per bambini dedicata a Carmen e un convegno internazionale su Maria Callas.
Il fronte sinfonico con i suoi 8 concerti vedrà sul podio il direttore principale Daniele Gatti il 22 aprile con il concerto inaugurale, al quale seguiranno i concerti del 10 maggio, e quello di chiusura dell’8 luglio; poi Zubin Mehta, direttore emerito a vita del Maggio, con i concerti del 29 aprile e del 25 maggio; Myung-Whun Chung il 5 maggio, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, il 19 maggio e Philippe Jordan il 29 giugno. I solisti impegnati a fianco dei Direttori sono Julia Hagen con Orozco-Estrada, Andrea Lucchesini con Zubin Mehta il 25 maggio, Thomas Zehetmair con Philippe Jordan e Lilya Zilberstein con Daniele Gatti l’8 luglio.
Per festeggiare l’inaugurazione del Festival, domenica 23 aprile 2023 Firenze sarà “invasa” dalla musica delle bande toscane con il progetto “Ben venga il Maggio! Musica nella città” in collaborazione con Anbima APS (Associazione Nazionale delle Bande Italiane Musicali Autonome); le esibizioni si terranno in varie piazze del centro della Città; al tramonto le bande si riuniranno in Piazza Vittorio Gui, davanti al Teatro del Maggio, per un pirotecnico finale musicale.

 

THE PROGRAMME OF THE 85TH EDITION OF THE FESTIVAL DEL MAGGIO MUSICALE
ON SUNDAY, APRIL 23, FLORENCE WILL BE “INVADED” BY THE MUSIC OF
TUSCAN BANDS

The Festival del Maggio Musicale turns 90 and still is the focal point of the programming of the Teatro del Maggio, who’s prestigious history is strongly linked to the Festival. Together with the two “new satellite festivals” – the ones of Autunno and of Carnevale – the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino contributes to make Florence the “City of the Festivals”. A two-and-a-half long programme, feaeturing three operas and eight concerts, with “closings” in September and November that make up a “Mehta-Mozart cycle”. Among the first lyrical operas, Don Juan, by Mozart, Othello, by Verdi, both directed by Zubin Mehta, and the much anticipated Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg by Wagner, directed by Daniele Gatti, plus, for the Mozart cycle, the reboot of two more works by Da Ponte, The Marriage of Figaro in September and All Women Do It in November, both directed by Zubin Mehta, for a total of five operas. Eight symphony concerts that begin on April 22, inaugurating the Festival with the direction of Daniele Gatti, and seven more concerts, including that of May 10, dedicated to the project Viva Verdi, included in the programme to push the promotion, by the Ministry of Culture, of Villa Sant’Agata, the house-museum of Giuseppe Verdi, and even an out-of-programme date on June 17, at the Visarno Arena, where the Orchestra will play with The Who. Finally, an opera for children dedicated to Carmen and an international convention on Maria Callas. The symphonic front, with its 8 concerts, will see Daniele Gatti, the main director, step up to the pedestal on April 22 for the inaugural concert, followed by the concerts of May 10, and the closing performance of July 8; then, Zubin Mehta, Director Emeritus for life of the Maggio, will direct the concerts on April 29 and May 25; Myung-Whun Chung on May 5; Andrés Orozco-Estrada on May 19; and Philippe Jordan on June 29. The solo artists who will perform beside the Directors are Julia Hagen with Orozco-Estrada, Andrea Lucchesini with Zubin Mehta on May 25, Thomas Zehetmair with Philippe Jordan, and Lilya Zilberstein with Daniele Gatti on July 8. To celebrate the inauguration of the Festival, on Sunday, April 23, 2023, Florence will be “invaded” by the music of Tuscan bands for the project Ben venga il Maggio! Musica nella città, in collaboration with Anbima APS (the National Association of Italian Autonomous Musical Bands). The exhibitions will be held in several squares of the historic city centre; at sunset, the bands will gather in Piazza Vittorio Gui, in front of the Teatro del Maggio, for a pyrotechnical musical finale.
