Our wedding in Florence
A promise of love, gratitude, and faith

To be married in Florence is to say “I do” to beauty itself. Every stone, every light, every bell that rings between its rooftops seems to guard an ancient promise: an echo of stories of love and faith. When we imagined our wedding, there was never any doubt that it should be here, in Florence, among its basilicas, its voices, its golden light. We chose the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the spiritual and human heart of the Medici city. The ceremony was celebrated by Don Marco Viola, prior of the basilica, together with Father Giuseppe Pagano, prior of Santo Spirito, and Don Leonardo Salutati; three voices, three hearts who gave depth and grace to a rite that touched us profoundly. Two moments from that day will stay with us forever: the unveiling, when the veil was gently spread over our heads as a sign of divine blessing, and the crowning, when two crowns were placed upon us as a symbol of Christ’s royal love. Ancient, solemn gestures that made us feel part of a tradition stretching across the centuries.
Entering the basilica to the sound of the San Lorenzo choir felt like an embrace. The voices rose towards the dome, and for an instant, time stood still. We chose to offer three bouquets: mine, one to the Madonna of the Expectation, venerated in the same basilica, and one to the Madonna of the Annunciation, in the Marian sanctuary that symbolises the city. There, we left a silent prayer for the future: a thought of gratitude and hope. After the ceremony, the streets of the centre were filled with light. Walking through the alleys and piazzas in a white gown, as tourists smiled and stopped to watch, felt like crossing a dream. We celebrated at Palazzo Pucci, a historic residence just steps from the Duomo, where elegance meets art and social commitment. Today managed by Spazio Reale Eventi, the venue donates part of its proceeds to charitable projects of the Diocese; the perfect way to join joy with gratitude, celebration with responsibility. On that day, Florence’s light was the same as ever: warm, golden, a little nostalgic. The bells of the Duomo marked the hour, the rooftops turned pink, and in the distance, the Arno mirrored the sky. Each time we pass by San Lorenzo or hear the bells ring through the evening air, we will know that a piece of our story remains there, woven into the life of the most beautiful city in the world.
Two months later, that promise was renewed in an even more universal setting: St Peter’s Square. During an audience filled with couples from all over the world, we received the Holy Father’s blessing. There were newlyweds from America and France, young couples from India and Indonesia, even Chinese newlyweds who had chosen to seal their union in the Vatican. All of us were united by an invisible thread: faith, which transcends borders and makes us part of the same story. For the occasion, newlyweds were given a special place close to the Pope. It was a sea of emotional faces, a silent choir of promises freshly spoken.
At the end of the audience, as the square slowly emptied, the Holy Father approached each couple, shaking hands and offering a persAonal blessing. It was a moment of pure emotion, a meeting between the intimate and the universal dimensions of faith. We carry that image with us: the square opening to the sky, the wind moving the white veils, and the Pope’s voice reminding us to cherish love each day as the most precious of gifts. From Florence to Rome, from the heart of the Medici city to the heart of Christendom, our “yes” found its deepest echo: one of gratitude, light, and faith.
