The art of slow mornings
Italy’s most coveted breakfast at Caffè dell’Oro in Florence
On the banks of the Arno, Portrait’s morning ritual with a view of Ponte Vecchio
There is a moment, in cities of art, when time seems to pause. In Florence it happens in the morning, especially with the arrival of spring, when sunlight brushes the Arno and the ancient stones return mother-of-pearl reflections. In that instant, awakening may become an aesthetic gesture, provided one chooses the setting with care. Among the finest options is undoubtedly breakfast at Portrait Firenze – recently awarded the title of Italy’s best – now presented at Caffè dell’Oro, following a symbolic passing of the baton from Portrait Milano: a dialogue between two capitals of Italian style, Milan and Florence. Discreetly overlooking the Lungarno degli Acciaiuoli, Caffè dell’Oro enjoys an enviable view of Ponte Vecchio – an auspicious way to begin the day. Here breakfast is an authentic invitation to slow down, to withdraw from urgency and reclaim one’s own time. Conceived not only for hotel guests but open to the city, the offering welcomes Florentines, cosmopolitan travellers and the habitués of fashion and art who move through the historic centre. It is a gesture of contemporary hospitality: refined, measured and self-assured. «Breakfast is the most important moment of the day, designed to ensure our guests begin at their best,» notes Luca Armellino, Executive Chef of Portrait Firenze. «We offer options for every need, from vegan to gluten-free, including a healthy corner and treats dedicated to children. We privilege local products and seasonality, ensuring an experience rich in artisanal excellence at every level.» Alongside him, an entirely female team sets the rhythm of the morning: Laura De Angelis in the kitchen; Ewa Brejdak, responsible for the buffet; and Caterina Maurilio, dining room manager, together create an atmosphere of welcome with the grace of a private drawing room. The interiors of Portrait Firenze, designed by Michele Bonan, evoke a refined 1950s elegance, recalling the era when the epic of Italian haute couture was taking shape in these very streets. Clean lines, warm tones and sartorial details narrate Florence between memory and contemporaneity. The “sweet direction” is entrusted to Cesare Murzilli, the company’s Executive Pastry Chef. The buffet presents traditional leavened pastries – maritozzi filled with whipped cream, veneziane with custard – alongside sweet and savoury croissants, classic cakes and artisanal bread served with butter and preserves. There are also carefully selected cheeses and cured meats, seasonal vegetables, fresh fruit and yoghurt: a geography of flavour privileging high-quality ingredients and a supply chain attentive to the territory. For those who prefer à la carte service, the eggs are particularly recommended, offered in multiple interpretations – poached, Benedict-style, Florentine – as well as pancakes, waffles, French toast, porridge, avocado toast and organic cold-pressed juices. A calibrated balance between international comfort and Italian identity. Three formulas are available each morning from 7 to 10 am: the Italian Breakfast (€26), with a basket of pastries, tea or coffee and fresh juice; the Buffet Breakfast (€38); and the Portrait Breakfast (€45), which adds a hot dish to the buffet selection. Beyond the formulas, what lingers is the sensation of having inhabited another dimension: seated just steps from the Arno as Florence slowly awakens, breakfast becomes not merely nourishment but a culture of living. A subtle luxury, coinciding with the privilege of beginning the day surrounded by beauty.
