Between history and mixology: The James Suite Hotel 1564
Its lounge bar, with velvet textures, soft lighting and bespoke details, is designed as a meeting point for guests and Florentines alike

Florence is a city that loves hidden details: family crests carved into stone, hidden symbols waiting to be deciphered, stories ready to be told. It is in this spirit that The James Suite Hotel 1564 Florence was born: a boutique hotel in a Renaissance palace in the Sant’Ambrogio district, where the 1564 Lounge Bar serves as the vibrant heart of a concept that blends hospitality, design, and mixology. The number 1564 engraved on the façade recalls the year the palace was built. Originally a convent, it has remained remarkably intact, with its sober façade, off-centre doorway, barrel vaults, and internal courtyard. Reinterpreting the space is James Cavagnari, an Italian-British architect with an international career spanning Ferragamo and Bulgari, who here signs his most personal work yet. With the support of local artisans and fine materials, Cavagnari has designed 14 unique suites, intimate yet theatrical, enriched by singular pieces such as Queen Elizabeth II’s travelling wardrobe, now transformed into a narrative design object.

If the rooms are sanctuaries of silence and elegance, it is on the ground floor that the hotel reveals its more social and contemporary soul. Here lies the 1564 Lounge Bar, a space of velvets, soft lighting, and bespoke craftsmanship, conceived as a meeting point for both guests and Florentines. The drink list is curated by Matteo Zed, corporate mixology director of the Manfredi Fine Hotels Collection and a leading name in international cocktail culture. For Florence, Zed has created a menu inspired by thirteen Florentine mysteries – popular legends, hidden symbols, and silent portraits. Each cocktail becomes a key to reading the city through artisanal infusions, rediscovered botanicals, and rare ingredients. Among the highlights are the Chianti Martini, which merges the timeless elegance of the Martini with Tuscan identity and a service recalling the Porcellino, the city’s emblem of good fortune; the refreshing Mango Italiano; and the playful Che Figo!, a witty, full-bodied gin sour. The atmosphere completes the experience: curated playlists, soft textures, and attentive service turn the bar into a small theatre of sensations. More than a simple complement to the hotel, it is a space that speaks to the city itself, adding a new chapter to Florence’s mixology scene. With The James Suite Hotel 1564 and its Lounge Bar, Florence now has a new address that seamlessly blends Renaissance charm with contemporary creativity, a place that feels both secret and cosmopolitan, where a suite or a cocktail become two distinct ways to live, and remember, the city.
