The Medici Dynasty Show

The story of Florence is intrinsically connected to the story of one family: the Medici. It was thanks to their patronage that Florence will take the leading role on an international scale, but if it wasn’t for a Medici lady, Anna Maria Luisa Ludovica, a large part of this inestimable heritage would have been lost. On the 31st October, 1737, it was her to sign the Family Pact with the Lorena, to whom she leaves “Galleries, Paintings, statues, libraries, jewelry and other precious things” but “with the express condition that the possessions will serve only as an ornament of the state, for the public utility and to attract the curiosity of Foreigners, and nothing to be transported, or removed , outside the capital, and the rule of the Grand Duchy”.

One of the most beautiful itinerary in Tuscany

The seaside is not far from Florence. The season starts in May and ends in October if the weather allows it. If you take the road north, for Versilia for example, it’s only an hour away drive on the highway. If instead you want to enjoy a more beautiful sea, that even if it takes longer to reach, the itinerary is one of the most beautiful in Tuscany and the journey takes a little longer. The satisfaction afterwards is beyond compare. One of these itineraries to reach the Tyrrhenian coastline, south of Piombino, the one of Follonica and Castiglione della Pescaia, in Maremma and along the old Volterrana for Montespertoli

Pistoia Summer – Blues Festival

The festival runs from July 1st to 24th at Pistoia’s Piazza Duomo, a mere 40 minutes from the center of Florence by car. The festival is kicked off by British hipster-folk rockers Mumford & Sons. Though the band’s latest music tends towards more traditional rock, they will undoubtedly invoke their epic banjo-laced shout-along anthems that made them famous. Counting Crows plays on July 3rd, unleashing their infectious brand of melodic rock-music, whose hits in the mid-90s like Mr. Jones often required invasive surgery to remove from one’s brain. Ireland’s Hozier plays on July 7th, whose lion-like riffs steeped in Catholic conflict are perfect for Italy. Passenger plays on July 15th, while July 17th is reserved for Italian Blues Night.

Festival Puccini

Few opera composers can match the work of the great Giacomo Puccini, and each year the Puccini Festival produces world-class opera in the picturesque town of Torre Del Lago, an hour and fifteen minutes from Florence by car, or 30 minutes from Puccini’s birth-town, Lucca. This year festival takes place from July 24th to August 29th, and showcases four of Puccini’s operas: Tosca, Turandot, Madama Butterfly, and Il Trittico. Held at the open-air Gran Teatro All’Aperto, seating 3,400 with stunning Massaciuccoli Lake as a backdrop, the setting is a fitting location for Puccini’s finest work.

Lucca Summer Festival

The stage at Lucca Summer Festival is set this year with 13 outstanding shows from July 1 – 28. Held in Lucca’s Piazza Napoleone, viewers can watch from up close or simply take in the sights from a café in the back, sipping wine or enjoying gelato. The festival gets started in style on July 1 with the iconic Bob Dylan. His latest set of studio albums have been critically hailed, and his performances are as engaging and provocative as ever. Paolo Nutini plays on July 8. A native son of the nearby Garfagnana hill-town of Barga (where one side of his family descends from), Nutini’s soulful lyrics and honey-gravel voice routinely get him labelled as one of the best singers of his generation.
