“Firenze 2015. Un anno ad arte” – A magnificent set of exhibitions

As it happens every year, “Florence. A year in art” will take place, the tenth edition offering a magnificent and complex set of exhibitions with predominantly historical – artistic character, developing ideas offered by the museums themselves and by their collections. The traditional partners, Ente Cassa di Risparmio of Florence and Florence Museums with Opera Laboratori Fiorentini di Civita Group, are engaged to implement a challenging program, and due to the forthcoming reform of the Ministry in its central and peripheral government agencies, this edition may be the last to involve the Museums of Florence as a unitary and autonomous institution. In fact, in the coming years, due to the new autonomy in which the current Superintendence will be divided (The Uffizi Gallery and the Academia, Bargello Museum, Regional Museums, under the protection of the territorial jurisdiction), the framework of collaborations could change significantly. Between the Renaissance and Baroque there are four monographic exhibitions placed, hinged to the collections and at the same time enriched by loans of excellence. Each will be dedicated to the presentation of a painter, little known to the public, according to a policy of promotion based on studies conducted by leading experts. Only large museums like the Uffizi and the Academia Gallery can afford to propose artistic figures other than the popular and best known, thus emphasizing its own mission of pioneering the rediscovery of criticism and art education. Therefore, Piero di Cosimo, Carlo Portelli, Gherardo delle Notti, Carlo Dolci will be parading throughout the arc of the year. The first exhibition is dedicated to Gerrit Honthorst from Utrecht, also known as Gherardo delle Notti, whose presence in Italy in the early seventeenth century will be enhanced and most of all, the enthusiastic Florentine response, which ensured four canvases to the Medici collections. Next to Gerrit, who owes his nickname to his talent for depicting nocturnal scenes, lit by oil lamps and candles, there will be shown canvases of other painters from the ancient Netherlands, who were especially dedicated to the same luministic research. A transversal argument that gathered artists of Europe and not only, together for centuries, will be dedicated to the exhibition of the Museo degli Argenti: The Lapis Lazuli. Stone, frequently imported from the heart of Asia, besides being used to create beautiful and precious objects, served painters providing them – once it was minced and reduced to powder – together with the addition of gold, with the most royal and expensive pigment, the so called Ultramarine blue, an act used to evocate the supreme spheres of the sky and to dress the divinities. Continuing the excavation within its historical collections, assembled and created from the foundation, in 1914, the Modern Art Gallery, will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Florence as capital of the united Italy, together with an exhibit dedicated in particular to the furnishings and artworks of King Vittorio Emanuele II for the sumptuous and labyrinthine Florentine organization of Palazzo Pitti, that he has gathered during his stay in the city.

Come ogni anno, prende l’avvio di “Firenze – Un anno ad arte” la cui decina edizione offre un magnifico e articolato insieme di rassegne a prevalente carattere storico – artistico, sviluppando gli spunti offerti dai musei stessi e dalle loro raccolte. I partner tradizionali, Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze e Firenze Musei con Opera Laboratori Fiorentini di Civita Group, sono impegnati nell’attuazione di un programma impegnativo che, per effetto dell’imminente riforma del Ministero nei suoi organi centrali e periferici, potrebbe essere l’ultimo a coinvolgere il Polo Museale Fiorentino come istituto unitario e autonomo. Infatti, nei prossimi anni, per effetto delle nuove autonomie nelle quali sarà suddivisa l’attuale Soprintendenza (Gallerie degli Uffizi e dell’Accademia, Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Polo Museale Regionale, competenza della tutela territoriale) lo schema delle collaborazioni potrebbe mutare anche in modo significativo. Tra il Rinascimento e il Barocco si collocano ben quattro mostre monografiche, incardinate alle collezioni e al tempo stesso arricchite da prestiti d’eccellenza. Ognuna sarà dedicata alla presentazione di un pittore poco noto al grande pubblico, secondo una politica di valorizzazione fondata sugli studi dei massimi esperti. Solo grandi musei come le Gallerie degli Uffizi e dell’Accademia possono permettersi di proporre figure artistiche diverse da quelle più conosciute e popolari, accentuando così la propria missione di pionieristica riscoperta critica e di educazione all’arte. Dunque sfileranno nell’arco dell’anno Piero di Cosimo, Carlo Portelli, Gherardo delle Notti, Carlo Dolci. La prima mostra è quella dedicata a Gerrit Honthorst detto Gherardo delle Notti, da Utrecht, del quale sarà valorizzata la presenza in Italia nel primo Seicento e soprattutto l’entusiastica ricezione fiorentina, che assicurò quattro grandi tele alle collezioni medicee. A Gerrit, che deve il suo soprannome al talento per le scene notturne rischiarate da lucerne e candele, saranno affiancati altri pittori degli antichi Paesi Bassi, specialmente dediti alle medesime ricerche luministiche. Un argomento trasversale, che per secoli accomunò gli artisti d’Europa e non soltanto, è quello cui verrà dedicata la mostra del Museo degli Argenti: il Lapislazzuli. La Galleria d’arte moderna, proseguendo lo scavo storico all’interno delle proprie collezioni, riunite e create a partire dalla fondazione, nel 1914, celebrerà la ricorrenza dei 150 anni da Firenze capitale dell’Italia unita con una mostra dedicata in particolare alle opere d’arte e agli arredi acquisiti da Re Vittorio Emanuele II per la sontuosa e labirintica reggia fiorentina di Palazzo Pitti, nel periodo della sua permanenza in città.
