Two icons. Andy Warhol e Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Thirty six photographs in an exhibit that can be visited from January 8th to March 5th 2017 at Mantova Outlet Village and realized in collaboration with ONO contemporary art. Warhol has succeeded to sample the major part of the music icons, fashion and celebrities in general, being able to offer almost a summary of the various products of the pop culture, that precisely in those years was reaching its peak. With the establishment of the Factory in the course of the 70s and the 80s he was able to put together the most diverse worlds who populated the streets of New York, whether the more “extroverted” one, made out of glam, parties and glitter, or the one linked more to the underground, that developed between metros and the Manhattan streets. Jean-Michel Basquiat started his activity as a graffiti artist in 1977, he was seventeen years old and together with his friend Al Diaz, a young man who was working on the walls of Jacob Riis, in Manhattan, he started to realize graffiti works on the streets of New York signed as SAMO, acronym for “Same Old Shit”. In 1978 after giving up his studies, he starts earning his living by selling postcards illustrated by him, and it was precisely this activity to draw the attention of Andy Warhol who, approached by a restaurant in Soho sold some of his works. After frequenting for years the same locations, Club 57 and Mudd Club, also frequented by Madonna (with whom he had a relationship) and by Keith Haring, with whom he will tighten a long-life friendship, it will be Warhol who will help him to get into the art world, through the stepping stone that at the time was his Factory. When Warhol dies, in 1987, Basquiat is left profoundly affected, despite the failure of their partnership. After a while the abuse of drugs together with mental health issues lead Basquiat to a premature death. On August 12, 1988, the artist dies of an overdose in his New York apartment. Considered by many the father of the Street Art together with Keith Haring, he was the one who knew how to bring into the spotlight the graffiti art and he closed the golden age of contemporary art which in the 90s will move its epicenter from New York to London.

Due icone. Andy Warhol e Jean-Michel Basquiat. Trentasei fotografie in una mostra visitabile dall’8 gennaio al 5 marzo 2017 presso Mantova Outlet Village e realizzata in collaborazione con ONO arte contemporanea. Warhol era riuscito a campionare la maggior parte delle icone della musica, della moda e dello star system in generale, arrivando ad offrire quasi un compendio dei vari prodotti della pop culture, che proprio in quegli anni stava raggiungendo il suo apice. Con la creazione della Factory nel corso degli anni Settanta e Ottanta era invece riuscito a mettere insieme i mondi più disparati che popolavano le strade di New York, sia quella più “estroversa”, fatta di glam, feste e lustrini, così come quella più legata al sotterraneo, che si sviluppa tra le metropolitane e tra i vicoli di Manhattan. Jean-Michel Basquiat aveva iniziato la sua attività come graffitista nel 1977, aveva 17 anni e insieme all’amico Al Diaz, un giovane che operava sui muri della Jacob Riis, a Manhattan, inizia a realizzare graffiti per le strade di New York firmandosi come SAMO, acronimo di “SAMe Old shit” (letteralmente sempre la stessa merda).  Nel 1978, dopo aver lasciato gli studi, comincia a guadagnarsi da vivere vendendo delle cartoline illustrate da lui, e sarà proprio quest’attività a farlo notare da Andy Warhol che, avvicinato in un ristorante di SoHo comprerà alcune delle sue opere.
Dopo aver frequentato per anni gli stessi locali, il Club 57 ed il Mudd Club, frequentati anche da Madonna (con la quale avrà una relazione) e da Keith Haring, con il quale stringerà un’amicizia che durerà per tutta la sua vita, sarà proprio Warhol che lo aiuterà a sfondare nel mondo dell’arte, attraverso il trampolino di lancio che all’epoca era la sua Factory.
Quando Warhol muore, nel 1987, Basquiat ne rimane profondamente colpito, nonostante la rottura del loro sodalizio. Dopo poco tempo l’abuso di droga unita ai problemi mentali conducono Basquiat ad una morte prematura. Il 12 agosto del 1988 l’artista muore di overdose nel suo appartamento newyorkese. Da molti considerato il padre della Street Art insieme a Keith Haring, è stato colui che ha saputo portare alla ribalta il graffitismo e ha chiuso l’epoca d’oro dell’arte contemporanea che negli anni ’90 sposterà il  proprio epicentro da New York a Londra.
