Maestro Franco Zeffirelli was born in Florence in 1923 during a period of depression for Italy, when fascism, following the success of the March on Rome, seemed to shed new hope after the Great War. His father, Ottorino Corsi, a wealthy dealer of precious textiles, refused to recognise him, therefore his childhood was not very happy.

His mother, Adelaide Garosi, had three children from her husband who, however, was gravely ill at the time, so everyone knew that the child she was expecting was the result of an extramarital affair, which, in those years, was seen as a great scandal; undaunted, she moved to Milan to live with her eldest daughter. Zeffirelli’s mother was already sick, and passed away when he was only six years old. Zeffirelli always remembered his mother fondly, and how he owes her his name. In fact, when he was sent to the Hospital of the Innocents in Florence, which assisted illegitimate and abandoned children, the Institute assigned them a name following an alphabetical order, and when his turn came they were assigning names starting with the letter “Z”, and since his mother loved Mozart’s “zeffiretti” in “Così Fan Tutte,” he chose his surname, which, by mistake, the civil registry official misspelled as “Zeffirelli” instead of “Zeffiretti.” At the age of 19 the father decided to recognize him, and added the name “Corsi,” therefore, on his first passport, his name read Gianfranco Corsi “in art Zeffirelli.” Zeffirelli recounts his uneasy childhood and adolescence in the unforgettable movie “Un thè con Mussolini,” from 1999.

After his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and covering some roles as an actor, he became a set designer and assistant director of Luchino Visconti, which ignited both an artistic collaboration and a troubled love affair. He met important personalities that marked his life, from Cocteau, Marais and Coco Chanel, Queen Elisabeth II, Paul VI, Hillary Clinton, Liz Taylor, Laurence Oliver. Zeffirelli was driven by the desperate strength of someone who grew up surrounded by little love but is able to achieve his dreams, never feeling sorry for himself, and accompanied by a positivity that will always support him. In an interview about his father, he said: “My father always scared me a bit. He had more lovers than hair on his head; he was always quite the man-whore. Who knows how many siblings I have scattered around the world.” His love for art, culture and beauty will represent the premise for his uncommon aesthetic taste, which pervades all of his works, like a trademark, both in his cinematographic contributions and opera sets, appreciated worldwide. Coco Chanel, Maria Callas, Elisabeth Taylor, Montserrat Caballè are just some of his greatest friends. In 2017, the reconstruction works in Palazzo San Firenze were completed, and the “Franco Zeffirelli International Centre for Performing Arts” was inaugurated, where the memory and artistic heritage of the great director is preserved.

The Maestro confessed with great joy that “this realization happened by chance… imagine what a seductive lover destiny is, yet at times it can be sadistic and gentle: to think that in that same building, of which I feared the shadows as a child, I will ultimately leave my own shadow, however bright, which won’t scare anyone… all the papers, notes and sketches concerning my work are part of an archive that I chose to leave to Florence through this Foundation, so that my city, depositary of priceless and unparalleled artistic and cultural values, may have a patrimony of performing arts”.

Il Maestro Franco Zeffirelli nasce a Firenze nel 1923, proprio quando il nostro paese attraversava un grave periodo di depressione, quando il fascismo, dopo il successo della marcia su Roma, sembrava dare nuove speranze in seguito alla Grande Guerra. Il padre, Ottorino Corsi, un agiato commerciante di stoffe pregiate, si rifiutò di riconoscerlo e l’infanzia non fu certo felice.

La madre, Adelaide Garosi, aveva avuto tre figli dal marito che al tempo era gravemente malato, per cui tutti sapevano che il figlio che attendeva era frutto di una relazione e in quegli anni questo rappresentava un grande scandalo; lei non si perse d’animo e si trasferì a Milano, dalla figlia maggiore. La madre era già malata e morì quando Franco Zeffirelli aveva solo sei anni. Zeffirelli ricorda sempre con tenerezza sua madre e come deve a lei il suo nome: quando venne mandato all’Istituto degli Innocenti di Firenze, che assisteva i bambini illegittimi o che erano stati abbandonati nella ruota, l’Istituto dava loro un cognome seguendo l’ordine alfabetico e quando fu il suo turno erano arrivati alla lettera “Z” e poiché sua madre amava l’aria degli “zeffiretti” di Mozart in “Così fan tutte” scelse quel cognome che, per errore, l’impiegato dell’anagrafe scrisse “Zeffirelli” anziché “Zeffiretti”. A 19 anni il padre decise di riconoscerlo e aggiunse il nome “Corsi”, così sul suo primo passaporto appariva il nome Gianfranco Corsi “in arte Zeffirelli”. La storia della sua non facile infanzia e giovinezza è raccontata dallo stesso regista nell’indimenticabile film “Un thè con Mussolini”, del 1999.

Dopo l’Accademia di Belle Arti a Firenze e qualche ruolo come attore, divenne scenografo e aiuto regista di Luchino Visconti, così ebbe inizio una collaborazione artistica e un tormentato amore. Incontri importanti hanno segnato la sua vita, da Cocteau, Marais e Coco Chanel, la Regina Elisabetta II, Paolo VI, Hillary Clinton, Liz Taylor, Laurence Oliver. Zeffirelli ha la forza disperata di chi è cresciuto nel poco amore ma riesce a concretizzare i propri sogni, senza mai piangersi addosso, con un positività che lo sorreggerà sempre. In un’intervista, in merito al padre ha raccontato: “Mio padre mi ha sempre fatto un po’ paura. Aveva più amanti che capelli in testa, è rimasto per tutta la vita un gran puttaniere. Devo avere chissà quanti fratelli sparsi per il mondo”. L’amore per l’arte, la cultura e la bellezza, saranno presupposto di quel gusto estetico fuori dal comune che pervade ogni opera, come un marchio di fabbrica, sia nelle opere cinematografiche, che nelle messe in scena delle opere liriche, apprezzate in tutto il mondo. Cocò Chanel, Maria Callas, Elisabeth Taylor, Montserrat Caballè sono state sue grandi amiche.

Nel 2017 sono stati ultimati i lavori nel Palazzo San Firenze e vi è stato inaugurato il “Centro internazionale per le arti dello spettacolo Franco Zeffirelli” che custodisce la memoria e eredità artistica del grande regista. Il Maestro ha confessato con gioia “questa realizzazione è stata un caso…pensa che amante seducente, a volte sadico e altre volte tenero sia il destino, pensare che in quello stesso palazzo di cui, da ragazzo, temevo le ombre, lascerò infine proprio la mia di ombra, ma luminosa, che non spaventi nessuno…tutte le carte, gli appunti e i bozzetti che riguardano il mio lavoro, fanno parte dell’archivio che ho scelto di destinare a Firenze creando questa Fondazione perché la mia città, depositaria di valori artistici e culturali impagabili e ineguagliabili possa disporre di un patrimonio delle arti dello spettacolo”.
