Our commitment for human rights

When I’m in Florence, I feel at home! The city of Florence means a lot to the entire Kennedy family and to everything we do for human rights. In 1966, when Florence was hit by the flood, my family participated in the reconstruction. I was 14 years old the first time I came here, and Florence has a heart that beats for RFK. Some weeks ago, we received the Silver Pegasus from the President of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani. It is a great honor for us to receive an award that symbolizes a region that has always been a pioneer in the defense of human rights. Tuscany was thus the first state to be ahead of everyone in the battle for civil rights, for example, with the abolition of the death penalty by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo in 1786, courageously implementing a choice that sent a signal to the entire world, a gesture of “building peace” and bearing “positive values,”. Education, Inclusion, Sustainability, and Community are the key areas of intervention for RFK Human Rights Italia (hereafter RFK Italia), founded in Italy on 2005. RFK Italia was established with the mission of carrying forward the moral legacy of my father, Senator Robert Francis Kennedy, by raising awareness of human, civil, and political rights through projects that enable each individual to actively participate in making a difference—at school, within families, in businesses, and in their communities. One of the organization’s core activities is human rights education. Since 2006, RFK Italia has trained over 505.125 Italian students, 3.276 teachers, and actively involved 1.919 schools. Leveraging its extensive experience in school education, RFK Italia has become a key player in civic education. In fall 2020, RFK Italia launched the first edition of “CivicAttiva”. The course, arrived this year at its 3rd edition, aims to help teachers develop multidisciplinary skills and competencies, focusing on ethical values through different voices and field experiences. The course provided participants with insights and approaches to help students understand what it means to be civically engaged today. Through the Bobby’s Dream program for socio-economic inclusion, RFK Human Rights Italia is committed to addressing the issue of socio-economic inequality that significantly affects vulnerable populations in Italy. The program aims to train potential employment in vulnerable situations on human rights and the rights and duties of workers. In 2023, RFK Human Rights Italia established two pilot trainings: one for ten Socio-Health Assistants (ASA) in the Milan area, and another for eight high fashion embroiderers, held in Florence at our headquarters. Our head quarter, the RFK International House of Human Rights is located in Florence, at “Le Murate,” an architectural complex originally built in 1424 to accommodate cloistered nuns. It was later converted into a city prison from 1845 to 1985. The context in which it is situated makes the RFK International House a uniquely symbolic place, transformed and repurposed from a site of pain and suffering into an international center for human rights education and the dignity of all human beings. The RFK International House of Human Rights is also a guesthouse made by 12 bedrooms, a communal kitchen, a living room, a library, and a loggia. There are also two multifunctional rooms equipped for meetings, presentations, seminars, and training courses. Between May 2020 and June 2021, we hosted 33 people within volunteers of the Red Cross and doctors strongly committed since the early stages of the pandemic. RFK Italia also helped 51 families, together with Italian Red Cross, with box delivery of basic needs from May 2020 to June 2021. RFK Italia commitment was recognized by the Italian Red Cross with the award of the Medal of Merit “The time of kindness” in the bronze class. From February 2022 to March 2023 8 Afghan students were hosted at the RFK International House thanks to a scholarship from the University of Florence. After few days from the beginning of the war in Ukraine, thanks to the collaboration with local associations, we were able to collect hundreds of basic needs that we sent to Ukraine with 22 trucks. 9 refugees were also hosted at the guesthouse from February 2023 to April 2023.
