Liu Youju at the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.
In the works of the Chinese painter, “the clamour fades”

In an age dominated by the relentless noise of daily life, where sounds, images, and information follow one another without pause, the art of Liu Youju emerges as an invitation to rediscover the beauty inherent in silence, to restore a profound bond with Nature, and to cultivate inner listening as a means of spiritual connection. On the occasion of his participation in the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, inaugurated on Saturday, May 9 and open until Sunday, November 22, 2026, the title of the selected work, Fading Clamor, effectively synthesises and evokes this contemporary tension, inviting viewers to stop, to observe what escapes the eye, and to reflect on their own role in the world. Liu Youju was invited to take part in the National Pavilion of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, located at Palazzo Donà dalle Rose, whose theme, The Forest. The Undergrowth, presents these as symbolic, spiritual, and mysterious spaces: places where the visible and the invisible, Nature, human beings, and the cosmos enter into dialogue. The artist has developed the theme through his own style, with rhythmic and decisive calligraphic gestures, fluid brushstrokes, and swirling interweavings that dissolve the boundaries between natural landscapes and inner worlds.
Silence, in his works, is neither absence nor emptiness, but a space dense with meaning, a powerful presence that permeates his visual research and becomes a universal language. Inner reflection merges with the landscape, while the chaos of contemporary life fades into the quiet of Nature, offering us a refuge in which to rediscover ourselves. The mind, freed from cultural superstructures, can thus enter into dialogue with the universe, overcoming the rigidities imposed by everyday life. Among the cultural initiatives promoted by the National Pavilion of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, in collaboration with Fondazione Donà dalle Rose and Acontemporaryart, an exhibition dedicated to the painter, entitled Origin, will be held from July 10 to August 8, 2026, in the Galleria dei Dogi at Palazzo Donà dalle Rose. It will present a selection of 15 paintings through which the artist, in line with the theme of the Pavilion, explores the relationship between human beings and their intimate connection with Nature: lush woods, majestic trees, brightly coloured flowers, lakes of crystalline water, and imposing mountains recur throughout his canvases as symbols of connection with the natural world. Liu Youju’s trees are not static: their forms, often immersed in landscapes suspended between reality and imagination, seem to come alive, intertwining with sky, earth, and water. The forest becomes a sacred space in which silence takes shape, a visual language that needs no words, where the self intertwines with the other and the individual rediscovers their place within a universal order. Created with India ink and acrylic colours on rice paper and canvas, Liu Youju’s works are rooted in Taoist tradition; his painting, rich in symbolism, becomes an act of resistance against the clamour of the modern world, a call to the need to live in harmony with the cosmos that surrounds us. Liu Youju proposes an alternative cosmology, in which abstraction and figuration cease to be opposites and merge into a single circular vision. His works invite us to reflect on our individual responsibility in the world, with the humility of those who recognise their interdependence with other living beings and with the environment that hosts us.
