Women Artists

For the occasion of International Women’s Day, the 8th of March, everyone remembers social, political and economic achievements of women and, at the same time, pays attention to violence and discrimination that women, unfortunately even today, are subjected to. Eike Schmidt, Director of the Uffizi Gallery, recently announced that “starting from this year, every March we will open two exhibitions dedicated to the women artists, one lived and active in the past and the other dedicated to the present”. A significant and eagerly awaited initiative which certainly will highlight the art of women in history; this is the main theme of the exhibitions which are dedicated to two painters, protagonists of their time, Plautilla Nelli (1522-1588) of the Renaissance period and Maria Lassnig (1919-2014) representing the twentieth century art. From 9th of March to 4th of June 2017, in the Galleria delle Statue e delle Pitture in Uffizi Gallery, you will be able to visit “Plautilla Nelli. Arte e devozione in convento sulle orme di Savonarola” curated by Fausta Navarro, the exhibit is dedicated to the nun artist, epigone of the School of San Marco. The exhibit seeks to deepen the understanding of the serial production of religious images through various techniques, starting from “spolvero” used by the nuns for the art of embroidery, the work which is usually related to monastic traditions. From the 25th of March to the 25th of June 2017 it will be the turn of “Maria Lassnig: Woman Power” curated by Wolfang Drechsler, in the Palazzo Pitti, Andito degli Angiolini. Maria Lassnig, together with Luoise Bourgeois and Joan Mitchelis, is among the most significant artists of the second half of the twentieth century. Her paintings are unique both in style and content. The favorite theme of the artist is herself and in fact the majority of her works are self-portraits. Maria Lassnig was a real pioneer of the feminist movement in the field of fine arts and this exhibition will display works related to five different decades of the Lassnig’s career, to trace the evolution and stylistic changes that occurred throughout her works.

In occasione del ricorrere della Giornata internazionale della donna, l’8 marzo, con la quale in tutto il mondo si ricordano le conquiste sociali, politiche ed economiche delle donne e, al contempo, si pone attenzione alle violenze e discriminazioni di cui le donne sono oggetto, purtroppo ancora oggi, sorprende piacevolmente la recente dichiarazione di Eike Schmidt, Direttore degli Uffizi, con la quale ha annunciato che “a partire da quest’anno, ogni marzo, inaugureremo due esposizioni dedicate a donne artiste, una vissuta e attiva nel passato e l’altra nel presente”. Un’iniziativa significativa, ed anche molto attesa, che certamente darà risalto all’arte delle donne nella storia; è questo il filo conduttore delle esposizioni dedicate a due pittrici, protagoniste del loro tempo, la rinascimentale Plautilla Nelli (1522-1588), e la novecentesca Maria Lassnig (1919-2014). Dal 9 marzo al 4 giugno 2017, nella Galleria delle Statue e delle Pitture degli Uffizi, si potrà visitare “Plautilla Nelli. Arte e devozione in convento sulle orme di Savonarola”, a cura di Fausta Navarro, la mostra dedicata alla suora pittrice, epigona della Scuola di San Marco. La mostra intende approfondire la conoscenza della produzione seriale di immagini devote attraverso l’utilizzo di varie tecniche, a iniziare da quella dello “spolvero” impiegata dalle monache per l’arte del ricamo, il lavoro maggiormente legato alle tradizioni conventuali. Dal 25 marzo al 25 giugno 2017 sarà la volta di “Maria Lassnig: Woman Power” a cura di Wolfang Drechsler, a Palazzo Pitti, Andito degli Angiolini. Maria Lassnig è tra le artiste più significative della seconda metà del XX secolo, insieme a Luoise Bourgeois e Joan Mitchell. La sua pittura è singolare sia nello stile che nel contenuto, il tema prediletto dall’artista è lei stessa ed infatti la maggioranza delle sue opere sono autoritratti. Maria Lassnig è stata una vera antesignana dell’universo femminista nell’ambito delle arti figurative e questa mostra vedrà esposte opere relative a cinque diversi decenni di attività della Lassnig, proprio al fine di ripercorrere l’evoluzione ed i cambiamenti stilistici occorsi nella sua attività.
