Intervistare John Turturro è un po’ come chiacchierare con un vecchio amico con il quale, per diversi motivi, si entra immediatamente in sintonia. Sarà per le sue origini siculo-pugliesi, per il carattere indipendente che l’ha portato a lavorare e sperimentare sia in campo teatrale che in quello cinematografico, lontano dalle imposizioni dello star-system hollywoodiano, o per la semplicità del suo comportamento così poco “da divo”. Insieme ripercorriamo le tappe della sua carriera cinematografica come regista. “Mac” del 1992, segnò con successo il suo esordio nella regia al 45° Festival di Cannes, “Si il mio primo film da regista, raccontai la storia di mio padre, un muratore, un uomo molto tradizionalista e una cantante jazz, mia madre”. Il teatro lo appassiona da sempre e ricorda quanto “è stato emozionante avere il ruolo da protagonista in Questi Fantasmi di Edoardo De Filippo al teatro Mercadante per il “Festival Napoli scena Internazionale. Sapessi quanto è stato difficile fare una traduzione della commedia che potesse essere compresa dal pubblico americano, così distante dallo spirito partenopeo, e allo stesso tempo rendere la poesia del testo!”; “Romance and Cigarettes” è una commedia musicale e rappresenta un ritorno alle origini: “a casa mia si ascoltava e si ascolta sempre musica, mia madre era una cantante jazz e i miei numerosi zii erano tutti musicisti”. John Turturro ha anche la cittadinanza italiana e sorride mentre racconta alcune esperienze professionali in Italia: “quando ho girato il film documentario Sicilia nel 2008, sono andato dove abitavano i miei nonni, la riscoperta delle radici è stata fondamentale per capire chi sono. Stesso discorso per Passione nel 2010, che ho dedicato alla musica neomelodica napoletana”. Turturro rappresenta una certa atmosfera della New York italoamericana, interpreta un mondo grottesco e divertente, sempre un po’ ironico e con alcune velature di malinconia, al tempo stesso violento, colmo di contraddizioni razziali, un mondo che ha trovato in lui un interprete straordinario, dal volto indimenticabile. Interviewing John Turturro is a bit like talking to an old friend with whom, for several reasons, you are immediately in tune with. Maybe it is because of his Sicilian-Apulian origins, or for his independent character that has led him to work and experiment both in the theatre and cinematographic fields, astray from the impositions of the Hollywood star-system, or perhaps for his simple behaviour, so distant from that of a “star”. Together, we retraced the steps of his cinematographic career as a director. “Mac” (1992) marked his successful debut as a director at the 45th Cannes Film Festival, “Yes, it was my first film as a director: I told the story of my father, a bricklayer, a strong traditionalist, and that of a jazz singer, my mother”. He has always been a theatre enthusiast, and recalls how “emotional it was to have a lead role in Oh, these Ghosts! by Eduardo De Filippo at the Mercadante theatre for the “Festival Napoli scena Internazionale”. You cannot imagine how hard it was to translate the comedy in a way that could be understood by the American public, so faraway from the Neapolitan spirit, and, at the same time, express the poetry of the text!”. “Romance and Cigarettes” is a musical comedy that represents a return to the origins: “at home, we always listened to music. My mother was a jazz singer and my many uncles were all musicians”. John Turturro is also an Italian citizen and smiles when he talks about some of his professional experiences in Italy: “when I shot the documentary film Sicilia in 2008, I went where my grandparents lived, and the rediscovery of my roots was crucial for me to understand who I am. The same goes for Passione, in 2010, which I dedicated to the neo melodic music from Naples”. Turturro represents a certain atmosphere of Italian-American New York, interprets a grotesque and fun world, which is always a bit ironic and with hints of melancholy, yet at the same time violent, full with racial contradictions, a world that found in him an extraordinary interpret, with an unforgettable face.
