We’ve come nearly to the end of a year chock full of commemorations, celebrations, and conferences. Some of these events were sombre and others more light-hearted, but all were dedicated to exploring the last 200 years of our shared history and to jointly plan a prosperous future.

Together with our partners from Grosseto to Ferrara, and in the Republic of San Marino, over the last 12 months we have organized a series of more than 75 events that brought to light the richness and diversity of our common experience. We have looked at everything from economic investment to contemporary art; from the ultimate sacrifice made by so many during World War 2 to the spirit of volunteerism exhibited by American college students today. These events reminded us that our strong, official ties depend on the millions of connections formed by individuals over the last two centuries – above all, those family bonds forged through generations of immigration flows between our two countries. The bicentennial events hosted across the consular district drew more than 7,000 people and reached thousands more through extensive media reporting in traditional and social media. We’re grateful to outlets like “Florence is You” for covering our events and helping us tell our story. More than a year ago, we issued an open call to everyone in our consular district to collaborate with us in celebrating our historical and current ties and imagining how our bilateral relationship might evolve in the future.

I am personally very grateful for the enthusiasm and true passion with which this appeal was embraced by so many friends and partners. I enjoyed participating in their events and learning what the spirit of “Together200” means to them. The overall goal of the year, of all of these events that took place across the territory of our consular district, was the transmission of a clear and simple message: you have no better friend and partner than the United States – and vice versa. I hope we have succeeded in achieving this goal, but we can’t rest on our laurels! What we have done together this year should make us appreciate – but not take for granted – the basis for our strong ties. Looking ahead, we will continue to write our shared story building on the strong foundation laid over the last 200 years. Our relationship will continue to be defined by countless individual relationships created in fields ranging from business to academics, from science to sport. These relationships guarantee that we’ll be together for at least another 200 years. You all must be a part of this! Grazie per aver celebrato #Insieme200 con noi!

Siamo alla conclusione di questo anno pieno di commemorazioni, celebrazioni e convegni – alcuni seri, altri divertenti – ma tutti dedicati agli ultimi duecento anni di storia condivisa e alla pianificazione congiunta di un futuro proficuo. Negli ultimi dodici mesi abbiamo programmato con i nostri partner – da Grosseto a Ferrara e nella Repubblica di San Marino – una serie di circa settantacinque eventi che hanno portato alla luce vari aspetti della nostra esperienza comune, dall’investimento economico all’arte contemporanea, dal sacrificio dei caduti della seconda guerra mondiale al volontariato degli studenti americani di oggi. Abbiamo ricordato che un rapporto ufficiale così saldo dipende dai rapporti stretti nel corso di questi due secoli da milioni di individui e, soprattutto, dalle relazioni familiari forgiate grazie a un flusso continuo di immigrazione tra i nostri due paesi. A questi eventi abbiamo accolto circa 7.000 persone e ne abbiamo raggiunte altre migliaia tramite diverse trasmissioni televisive, post sui social media e articoli sui giornali come Florence is You.

Piu’ di un anno fa, abbiamo lanciato una proposta aperta a tutti nel nostro distretto consolare per collaborare con noi nel festeggiamento dei nostri legami storici, quelli attuali e nella pianificazione di un futuro insieme. Sono molto grato per l’entusiasmo e la passione con cui questa richiesta è stata accolta da tantisimi partner che hanno approfondito in maniera personale il significato di “Insieme200”. L’obiettivo di quest’anno – di tutti questi eventi sparsi nel territorio – era la diffusione di un messaggio chiaro e semplice: non esiste un amico, un partner, a voi più vicino degli Stati Uniti. E questo vale anche per noi. Spero che ci siamo riusciti. Però non possiamo riposare sugli allori. Tutto quello che abbiamo realizzato insieme nel corso del bicentenario, dovrebbe servire da stimolo a tutti noi per beneficiare – ma non dare per scontate – le fondamenta dei nostri forti legami. Adesso guardiamo verso il futuro: questi 200 anni ci forniscono le basi su cui continuare a scrivere la nostra storia comune. Il nostro rapporto sarà definito, come sempre, dagli innumerevoli nuovi legami creati nelle sfere economiche, accademiche, scientifiche e sportive. Questi legami ci possono garantire che staremo insieme per altri 200 anni! E voi potrete avere un ruolo centrale nella realizzazione di questo scopo.
