From December 15 (with encores on the 18, 20, and 22) the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino will see on stage the diptych Mavra / Gianni Schicchi by Igor Stravinsky/Giacomo Puccini. Mavra is a comic opera from 1921 composed by Igor Stravinsky during his stay in London for the shooting of the film Le sacre du printemps, inspired by a novel of Puškin, The Little House in Kolomna. The comedy Gianni Schicchi tells the farcical gimmicks of the main character, a Florentine rascal mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy for forging a will. The action takes place in Florence in 1299, where the Donati family is in turmoil after the death of their relative Buoso, who is believed to have left his substantial inheritance to a convent. To find a solution, they summon Gianni Schicchi, known for his cunning and shrewdness. The main character pretends to be the dying Buoso, however, while dictating his last will to the notary, he leaves his most valuable possessions to his “devoted friend” Gianni Schicchi, triggering the ire of his greedy relatives. Despite this, the ploy was driven by a noble purpose: Gianni Schicchi ensures a good dowry for his daughter Lauretta, allowing her to marry Rinuccio Donati, with all due respect to the haughty family. From January 10-12, 2025 Roméo et Juliette by Sergej Prokof’ev goes to scene, the famous ballet inspired by William Shakespeare’s tragedy. From January 3-5, 2025 the Orchestra of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, conducted by Timothy Brock, leads us in the magic of two great Walt Disney classics, with the most beautiful symphonic pages of the classical repertoire, performed live, in sync with animated images from Fantasia and Fantasia 2000, featuring works such as Symphony No.5 in C minor, Op. 67, and Symphony No.6 in F major, Op.68, Pastorale by Ludwig van Beethoven, the Nutcracker by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Claire de Lun, by Claude Debussy, L’Oiseau de feu by Igor Stravinsky. From January 16-23, 2025, Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi will be performed, the first title in the so-called “popular trilogy”. This opera, which debuted successfully on March 11, 1851, marking a turning point in the history of Opera; it was the first time that the main role was given to a miserable and deformed character of humble origins. Finally, from March 9-16, 2025, Norma by Vincenzo Bellini, which, despite an initially mild consensus, became one of the most appreciated operas of the 19th century, both for its very long and beautiful melodies and for the extraordinary powerful moments of declamation, also admired by prominent composers such as Rossini, Verdi and Wagner.
