One of the famous Florentine architect’s first projects, between 1422 and 1428 Brunelleschi constructed the Old Sacristy (Sacrestia Vecchia) in which his architectural vision was fully brought forth in the geometrical spaces accurately divided according to exact proportions. A cubical room covered by an umbrella-shaped cupola split into twelve segments, his simple and rigorous concept of space is enhanced by the use of the grey stone pietra serena, which emphasizes the bearing elements.The harmonious fusion of architecture and decoration makes the Old Sacristy one of the most complete and coherent creations of the early Florentine Renaissance.
