The Abbey church of San Miniato al Monte

The abbey church of San Miniato al Monte is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Florence and beyond. The drawing shows a reconstruction of the original 12th century structure, with which Dante Alighieri was certainly familiar. The typically Romanesque layout reflects the spatial style of Lombardy, while the decorations are clearly of classical origin. The façade, in particular, shows the classical style due to the presence of the five arches on the lower floor and the triangular tympanum on the roof and on the small columns framing the elegant central window. In the reconstruction, the convent is smaller than today’s rooms; in fact, there are records of the existence of a cloister from the 11th century onwards. Note the presence of a high bell tower framed by hanging arches, Romanesque elements also present in the apse. In the drawing, the floor is made up of marble tombstones added in the 19th century.
