Salento: a magnificent place

White beaches, a turquoise seaside, luxurious dunes, art, beauty and an excellent cuisine. 8 days and 1000 kilometers without any worries in Puglia. In the beginning of summer, when reception is more attentive, spots are still available and prices are very interesting. The trip can be organized by oneself: a web research, some calls made and then off you go, if you have already been there before your enthusiasm will be renewed and if this is the first time you take this trip, even better, there are places that never betray your expectations, especially if you plan it calmly and not go during the high season.

The second half of June can be the ideal period to make this trip: long sunny days, the heat still not merciless, usually the lack of rain and an attentive staff and reception with more than approachable prices (our trip hasn’t surpassed with everything included, 2000 euros for two people, 145 euros a day for each one of us).

1^st day

We flew – an hour and a half – from Firenze to Bari with low-cost company, then rented a car (the best price for a Panda 1.3 Diesel, almost new and adapted for our needs) and we began our tour. Taking the north way for example, towards Andria, to the Monte Castle (an incredible and majestic manor, octagonal built by Frederick II in 1250) to reach the city of Trani, along the seaside, to the San Paolo al Convento Hotel (room 115 with a beautiful terrace that offers an incredible view over the harbor and apsidal profiles of the splendid Cathedral; dinner in the narrow streets that offer the guarantee of having fresh fish at “La Locanda” Restaurant).

2^nd day  

The next day you take the south way and make a stop at the distinctive Polignano a Mare; continuing towards Brindisi, but without entering the city, the road takes you on the Adriatic shore to finally descend the coastline, rich in splendid views over a turquoise sea, to arrive after a few kilometers and… lots of curves… in Otranto for a stroll along the harbor, a good seafood meal in the historic center (“LaltroBaffo”), and one of the not to miss things on the list, is a visit inside the Cathedral. In the evening you reach the Ionian coast to Marina di Pescoluse at La Conca Hotel and restaurant, a good three star hotel, recently renovated.

3^rd, 4^th, and 5^th day

Turquoise seaside, white sands, luxurious dunes and a still friendly sun: a feast, including fresh fish washed down with a good rosé “primitive” of Joy, just behind the dune (Chiosco Katabba), not very crowed, giving the vibe of a true vacation. From here, during late afternoons, moving very little towards the almost dessert like inside, you can also plan trips towards some nearby towns like Ugento, a small village immersed in silence and a green countryside, and the bright Gallipoli, overlooking the sea, with a very suggestive antique side (the small but surprising Civic Museum on the center street is worth to visit).

6^th day

After leaving the hotel, going towards north, and after paying a visit to see the frescoes in Basilica of Santa Caterina a Galatina (this religious temple will be a surprise if you didn’t know about its existence), you continue towards Lecce, a baroque city of considerable merit (very suggestive is Piazza del Duomo during the night), where the Grand Hotel (at room 215) is located only two steps away from the center of town with the possibility of a garage and a pool set in an orange-garden, where having breakfast makes an excellent way to start your day.

7^th day

Living Bari without any rush, across the splendid Val d’Itria (that of Trulli di Alberobello), with a lovely gastronomic “break” at Cisternino and a stroll among narrow streets and white houses that almost make you feel like being in Patmos although you can’t see the sea from here (“Tre Lanterne” restaurant can be found in the center of a small, shaded piazza and its local cuisine is highly appreciated). At a short distance, is the beautiful Locorotondo placed on a small hill, with white houses, narrow streets and baroque palaces: a break that you wish to never end. Back in the car, and after a few driving kilometers, surrounded by majestic orchards of olive trees and endless vineyards, protected by tarpaulins so that they are sheltered and warm, you arrive in Bari at mid-afternoon at the Palace Hotel, just on the borders of the Citta Vecchia (junior suite 419, an upgrade contracted by telephone, garage, and an excellent breakfast service the next morning). Late afternoon you can visit the Old City, that has been really well restored, and the venerable San Nicola Cathedral, having then a nice dinner towards the animated Piazza Mercantile (Le Cecchina restaurant, good sea dish, great service and urban prices).

8^th day

The next morning, after a small stroll around the proximities of Normanno Svevo Castle, where in the alleys, the locals offer for a small touristic price the famous “orecchiette” (a typical dish of the place), obviously with the recommendation to cook them exclusively with… beets. 

Italiano

Spiagge bianche, mare turchese, dune rigogliose, arte, bellezze e ottima cucina. 8 giorni e 1000 chilometri senz’affanno in Puglia. A inizio estate, quando l’accoglienza è più attenta, le resse ancora in standby, e i prezzi molto interessanti. Il viaggio si può organizzare in proprio: un po’ di web, qualche telefonata e poi via, se è un ripasso si rinnoveranno gli entusiasmi, se è la prima volta ancora meglio, ci sono mete che non tradiscono, specialmente se le si vive in tutta calma e non in alta stagione. La seconda metà di Giugno può essere il periodo ideale: giornate con molta luce, caldo non ancora torrido, normalmente assenza di pioggia e scirocco, e un’accoglienza attenta con prezzi più che abbordabili (il nostro viaggio non ha superato tutto compreso i 2.000 euro in due, 145 euro a testa al giorno).

1° giorno

Si vola – un’ora e mezza circa – da Firenze su Bari con tariffa lowcost, si noleggia un’auto (la miglior tariffa per una Panda 1.3 Diesel praticamente nuova e adattissima per il nostro “on the road”) e si inizia il tour. Andando a nord per esempio, verso Andria, a Castel del Monte (un’incredibile e maestoso maniero a pianta ottagonale voluto da Federico II nel 1250), per poi raggiungere la città di Trani, sul mare, all’hotel San Paolo al Convento (la camera 115 con terrazzino ha vista superba sul porto e i profili absidali della splendida Cattedrale; la cena tra i vicoli dà garanzie di buon pesce fresco a “La Locanda”).

2° giorno

Si prende poi la direzione sud per una sosta nella caratteristica Polignano a Mare; quindi continuando in direzione Brindisi ma senza entrarvi, ci si porta sulla litoranea adriatica per scendere lungo la costa ricca di mirabili colpi d’occhio su un mare turchese, per arrivare dopo pochi chilometri e… molte curve… a Otranto per una passeggiata lungo il porto, una buona tavola di mare nel centro storico (“LaltroBaffo”), e da non mancare la visita all’interno della preziosa Cattedrale.

In serata, una volta doppiato il capo di Santa Maria di Leuca, si raggiunge la costa Jonica, per Marina di Pescoluse all’Hotel La Conca con ristorante, un buon tre stelle recentemente rinnovato.

3°- 4°- 5° giorno

Mare turchese, sabbie bianche, dune ancora rigogliose e sole non ancora cocente: una festa, compresi pesce fresco annaffiato da un buon rosé ‘primitivo” di Gioia, appena dietro la duna (Chiosco Katabba), poco affollamento, insomma vacanze vere. Da qui, nel tardo pomeriggio spostandosi di poco verso l’interno quasi deserto, si potranno anche programmare escursioni verso alcuni centri vicini, come Ugento, un piccolo borgo immerso nel silenzio e in una campagna verdissima, e la luminosa Gallipoli, a picco sul mare, molto suggestiva nella sua parte più antica (il piccolo ma sorprendente Museo Civico, 1 euro d’ingresso, nella via del passeggio centrale, merita la visita).

6° giorno

Lasciato l’hotel e presa la direzione nord, dopo una visita agli affreschi della Basilica di Santa Caterina a Galatina (sarà una sorpresa questo tempio religioso e del tutto inaspettata se non se ne conosceva l’esistenza) si prosegue verso Lecce, città barocca di notevole pregio (Piazza del Duomo specialmente di notte è altamente suggestiva), dove l’albergo, il Grand Hotel (con l’appartamento 215) si trova a due passi dal centro, con possibilità di garage e piscina immersa in un giardino-aranceto dove fare colazione la mattina sarà un ottimo inizio di giornata.

7° giorno

Partenza senza affanno per Bari, attraverso la stupenda Val d’Itria (quella dei Trulli di Alberobello), con un piacevolissimo “intervallo” gastronomico a Cisternino e una passeggiata fra vicoli e case bianche che pare d’essere a Patmos anche se il mare da qui non si vede (il ristorante ‘Tre Lanterne’ si trova al centro di una caratteristica piccola piazza ombreggiata e la sua cucina locale di terra è apprezzabile). Poco distante, la splendida Locorotondo erta su un piccolo colle tutta scalinate e case bianche, vicoli angusti e palazzetti barocchi: una sosta che vorreste non finisse mai. Di nuovo in auto, e dopo qualche chilometro ancora di guida, attorniati da una campagna di ulivi maestosi e infinite vigne di uva da tavola protette da teloni che le tengano riparate e calde, si arriva verso metà pomeriggio a Bari, Palace Hotel, ai limiti della Città Vecchia (junior suite 419, un upgrading contrattato telefonicamente, garage, e una breakfast-room da complimentarci, il mattino successivo). Nel tardo pomeriggio visita alla Città vecchia davvero ben restaurata, e alla veneratissima Cattedrale di San Nicola, e una piacevole cena verso il tramonto nell’animata Piazza Mercantile (ristorante “La Cecchina”, buon pesce, servizio attento e prezzi urbani).

8° giorno

Il mattino seguente ulteriore piccola passeggiata nei dintorni del Castello Normanno Svevo, dove nei vicoli appena accanto alcune popolane offrono a un modico prezzo al turista le famose “orecchiette” (pasta tipica del luogo), ovviamente raccomandandosi di cucinarle esclusivamente con …le rape!
