Gaitonde An artist for the soul
Gaitonde. Painting as a process, painting as life, curated by Sandhini Poddar, is the first Italian exhibit dedicated to the Indian artist, who devoted his whole existence to painting; an existence not lived on the edge, but still in a somber solitude, with little attraction towards fame. At the beginning of his artistic journey, in between the end of the forties and early fifties, Gaitonde dedicates himself to the figurative style, particularly taking inspiration from the abstract Modernism technique of Paul Klee, and from the Fauvism of Roualt and Matisse. Paintings and watercolors are characterized by a wide variety of colors and by the prevalence of the geometrical lines, which on a compositional level regards the painting and the miniature of the Indian tradition, either for the formalism of the figure with well-defined contours, or for the chromatics, for which it is used an intense yellow.
