A few words with Massimo Ruffilli and Alessandra Rosa, President and Director of Automobile Club Firenze – by Anna Balzani

During a meeting at the headquarters of Automobile Club Florence, Director Alessandra Rosa and President Massimo Ruffilli recounted several little known facts about this prestigious institution in Florence and about the historical building where it is located. Automobile Club Florence has over 41,000 members, being the 4th largest Club of its kind in Italy, after Rome, Milan and Turin. Having 22 districts in the province of Florence, the Club provides car support, manteinance and advice to its members, while also promoting traffic safety education programs for children to promote knowledge of and respect for the traffic regulations.

ACI provides roadside assistance and vehicle recovery to its members, whatever vehicle they are driving. “We associate with people, not with number plates” says Dr. Alessandra rosa, Director of the Automobile Club Florence. She goes on to say “we take the best care of our Club members and we often try to spoil them. For example, we organize an exclusive Christmas concert for them and we are the only Vehicle Club in Italy paying attention to this social side. Members of ACI can also ask ACI to take care of all the car related paperwork. For example, through the service “Bollo sicuro” customers can arrange a direct debit payment for their vehicle tax”. Being an Architect and a Professor of Industrial Design at the University of Florence, Massimo ruffilli, President of the Automobile Club Florence, tells us the story of the ACI headquarters in the city. The building was built in the early 60s and admired from the beginning for its original and modern style.

“This building, or better, this architectural organism, is a rare example of a tensile structure where the supporting structures bear the load of the floors, hung via steel tie-rods. Pasquale Borracci, Roberto Quentin, Vittorio Fazzini, Giorgio Billi, and the unforgettable Amos Pampaloni, leaders at the Automobile Club at the time, commissioned to design the new headquarters in 1958 to architects Giuseppe Gori, Raffaello Brizi, Domenico Cardini e Rodolfo Raspollini. The group gave birth to a building which is “hung” to its vertical structures. Here the relationship between form and function, structure and architecture is a minimalist one. The space is basic with no nods to decoration, a choice that makes the building a flexible and multipurpose one. It is a great example of Tuscan Constructivism and Rationalism which reminds us of works by the great masters of Bauhaus”. On the recent 100th anniversary celebration of the Mugello Race Circuit, together with Florence Mayor Dario Nardella we presented the project ACI Historical. With the aim of preserving vintage car driving, the program will protect antique vehicles of interest and support their collectors to legally drive them.

Durante un incontro presso la sede dell’Automobile Club Firenze con la Direttrice Alessandra Rosa ed il Presidente Massimo Ruffilli sono emerse molte curiosità sulla storia della prestigiosa istituzione e sulla sede fiorentina che la ospita. L’Automobile Club Firenze annovera 41.000 soci, è il 4° in Italia, dopo Roma, Milano, Torino, con 22 delegazioni diffuse sul territorio della provincia di Firenze e fornisce assistenza, servizi e consulenza automobilistica ai suoi soci, promuovendo anche iniziative di educazione stradale per i più piccoli al fine di favorire la conoscenza ed il rispetto delle regole di sicurezza stradale. “L’ACI fornisce assistenza di qualità ai suoi soci, a bordo di qualunque veicolo si trovino. Associamo le persone, non le targhe” afferma la Dott.ssa Alessandra rosa, Direttrice dell’Automobile Club firenze, la quale prosegue “abbiamo una grande attenzione verso i nostri soci, cerchiamo di coccolarli, per esempio organizziamo un concerto di Natale in esclusiva per loro, e siamo l’unico Automobile Club in Italia attento anche a questo aspetto “sociale”; all’ACI si possono delegare anche gli aspetti amministrativi del veicolo, infatti attraverso il servizio “BOLLO SICURO” il cliente autorizza l’addebito sul proprio conto corrente della tassa automobilistica”. Il Professore Massimo ruffilli, Presidente dell’Automobile Club firenze, in qualità di architetto e professore universitario di design industriale presso l’Università degli Studi di Firenze, ci racconta la storia della sede ACI di Firenze che fu realizzata e completata agli inizi degli anni ‘60 ed ammirata fin da subito per la sua originalità e modernità: “È un edificio, o meglio, un organismo architettonico che rappresenta un raro esempio di “tensistruttura” dove, cioè, le strutture portanti recano appesi i solai mediante tiranti d’acciaio. Nel 1958 i dirigenti dell’Automobil Club del tempo, Pasquale Borracci, Roberto Quentin, Vittorio Fazzini, Giorgio Billi, con l’indimenticabile Amos Pampaloni, dettero l’incarico di progettare una nuova grande sede dell’ACI agli architetti Giuseppe Gori, Raffaello Brizi, Domenico Cardini e Rodolfo Raspollini, i quali dettero vita ad un edificio “appeso” alle strutture verticali, nel quale il rapporto tra forma e funzione, struttura e architettura, privilegia l’essenzialità dello spazio senza alcun elemento decorativo, rendendo la struttura flessibile e polifunzionale. Un grande esempio di costruttivismo e razionalismo di matrice toscana che si accosta con le opere dei grandi maestri del Bauhaus”. In occasione della recente rievocazione del centenario del circuito stradale del Mugello è stato presentato a Palazzo Vecchio con il Sindaco di Firenze, Dario Nardella, il progetto ACI STORICO, a salvaguardia dell’automobilismo d’epoca, delle auto di reale portata storica ed alla tutela giuridica dei collezionisti.
